Wolves End Regular Season with Loss to Chargers

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Georgia Volleyball team ended their regular season with a five-set loss to Alabama Huntsville on Saturday.

UWG (14-14, 8-8 GSC) got out to a fast start offensively, resulting in a 2-0 lead until their offense faded as the Wolves finished with 43 kills on a .099 hitting percentage which led to their loss to Alabama Huntsville (17-9, 13-3 GSC).

West Georgia thoroughly dominated the first set, putting down 13 kills on a .235 hitting percentage, while holding UAH to 4 kills on a -.148 hitting percentage. The massive discrepancy in the hitting numbers led to an easy 25-12 win for the Wolves.

Set two was much of the same as UWG held Alabama Huntsville to a -.048 hitting percentage in the game. Along with exception defensive play and four kills from Sanai Young and three kills from Zoë LaBreche, West Georgia went on to win the set, 25-21.

With their backs against the wall, Alabama Huntsville found their rhythm in set three. After hitting in the negatives in the first two sets, the Chargers rebounded, by hitting .258 in the third set, leading to a 25-14 win.

Set three completely flipped the momentum of the match as UAH marched out to a 10-4 lead in the fourth. UWG answered with a 7-2 run, cutting their deficit to one point before back-to-back kills from Autumn Mayes ignited a 7-1 Alabama Huntsville run to extend the Chargers lead to 20-13. Down by seven, the set was too far out of reach for West Georgia as UAH went on to win it, 25-16.

The fifth set was the most competitive set of the match as both teams struggled to contain the other's offense. Marley Staats put down three kills in the set for the Wolves, but the firepower coming back from Alabama Huntsville was too much for UWG as UAH clinched the match with a 15-12 set five win.

LaBreche finished with a team-high 14 kills while Kelli Kaiser anchored the back line with a match-high 23 digs.

West Georgia will be back on Tuesday for the first round of the GSC Tournament with a trilogy against Valdosta State in Valdosta, GA set.
