CARROLLTON, Ga. – The final non-conference tune up went the way of the Wolves on Saturday as the UWG women's basketball team defeated Talladega 78-50 at The Coliseum.
West Georgia (3-0) used a strong first half, and overcame a third quarter lull to stay perfect and earn their first 3-0 start since 2014. The Wolves finished the game shooting 44.6 percent from the field, including 11 three-pointers.
K'Nari Holliday had a huge game, registering her first double-double in a Wolves uniform with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
After the Wolves gave up the opening basket to Talladega, it was six three-pointers in the first quarter as West Georgia led by 10 after the first quarter. The Wolves offense stayed hot throughout the half, shooting 50 percent from the field in quarter number two, and eventually building as much as a 19-point lead.
The combo of
Zuriyah Davis and
Anna Gernatt combined for over half of UWG's first half points as David hit three three-pointers and Gernatt poured in four as the Wolves led 44-28 at the break.
Both teams started cold in the second half, as by the third quarter media timeout each team had just one field goal. The Wolves finished the final four minutes of the period on a 10-4 run, however, taking a 56-34 lead into the final 10 minutes.
UWG outscored the Tornadoes 22-16 in the final quarter as every player that dressed for UWG was able to get in the game and the Wolves ended the game with 11 of the 13 players scoring points.
Defensively, the Wolves held Talladega to 33.3 percent from the field and 2-of-9 from the three-point line.
Mykah Anderson was a lock-down defender, registering four steals to go with her game-high six rebounds.
Along with Holliday's game-high 20, Davis added 16 on 6-of-11 shooting and finished the game with four three-pointers. Gernatt finished with 12 points while Anderson added nine.
The biggest negative number for the Wolves was the turnovers as Talldega forced 26 turnovers with 10 of those coming in the third quarter.
"We celebrate every win, but they exposed some things that we've got to work on over this next week as we prepare for conference play," said head coach
Joanna Reitz.
