Statesmen Spoil Wolves' Senior Day

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia football team suffered a 47-13 senior day loss to the hands of the Delta State Statesmen on Ra-Lin Field Saturday night.

West Georgia (6-3, 5-2 GSC) was outscored 30-6 in the second half and allowed 411 yards of total offense to the Statesmen (8-1, 6-1 GSC) in a game that had playoff implications coming in.

The game started with back to back punts, one from each side, and when UWG got the ball back with 9:11 left in the first quarter, the Wolves rattled off a 12-play, 80-yard drive that took over seven minutes off the clock, capped off by a Cameran Brown two-yard touchdown run that put the Wolves ahead 7-0.

Delta State wasted no time answering the touchdown from UWG, as they scored on their very next possession, riding the legs of Christian Malloy into the endzone to tie the game at seven a piece. After forcing a UWG punt, Delta State got the ball back and proceeded to drive down and add a field goal to make the score 10-7 with 2:48 left in the half.

UWG went three and out on their next possession, leaving Shegog and Delta State 1:45 seconds at the end of the half to add to their lead, and they did just that with a five yard touchdown run from Shegog, making the score 17-7 going into the half.

The Wolves went into the locker room with 88 yards of total offense, 69 of those being on the ground, compared to the 152 yards from the Statesmen.

UWG showed signs of life, however, forcing a DSU three and out on their opening drive of the second half, getting the ball back with 13:40 on the clock. UWG then went on a 12-play drive that spanned almost five minutes of game time, but missed a 29 yard field goal giving the ball right back to DSU.

The West Georgia defense stood tall once again forcing a punt again, and this time Steven Peterson came free and blocked the punt, recovering it in the endzone for the second UWG touchdown of the contest. The PAT was blocked, however, and the score remained 17-13 with Delta State on top.

With three minutes left in the third quarter, the tides turned for UWG as Delta State recorded a safety and a fumble recovery which resulted in a touchdown all in the span of two game minutes, as the Statesmen took a 26-13 lead into the final frame.

The fourth quarter was all Delta State, as the Statesmen outscored UWG 21-0 in the fourth, which was capped off by a 70-yard scoop-and-score by Demario Martin which put the game out of reach for good, ending the game by a final of 47-13.

Rajaez Mosley and Cameran Brown led the Wolves in rushing with 50 and 45 yards respectively, while Brown also led the way with 111 passing yards before exiting the game in the third quarter due to injury. T.J. Lockley added 99 yards receiving on four catches, which was a career high for the sophomore from Daytona Beach. Defensively, West Georgia was led by Keondre Williams and Xavier Robinson with 10 tackles each.

UWG will be back in action next weekend, November 11, for the final week of the regular season as they travel to Valdosta, Ga for a matchup with their rival, Valdosta State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
