PENSACOLA, Fla. – A red-hot final quarter from the home team was the demise of the UWG women's basketball team as the Wolves fell 69-67 on the road to the West Florida Argonauts on Sunday afternoon.
The Wolves (4-4, 1-4 GSC) led by 10 at the end of three quarters, but West Florida (7-2 (4-1 GSC) scored 30 fourth quarter points, shooting 63 percent from the field including three fourth quarter three-pointers to hand the Wolves a fourth straight loss.
Junior guard
Zuriyah Davis finished with a game-high 28 points, registering a career-high and putting up the most points by a UWG player since 2021-22.
K'Nari Holliday had 12 points and 15 rebounds to record her fourth double-double in a UWG uniform.
Davis hit two three-pointers in the opening moments of the game and Holliday had a pair of buckets as the pair combined to score all of the Wolves first 10 points. By the end of the first, David would have 10 of the Wolves' 18 points as the two teams ended the period deadlocked at 18-18.
Just under four minutes into the second quarter,
Sydne Tolbert picked up an old fashioned three-point play to give UWG a 23-22 lead, their first lead since Davis' three-pointer opened the game's scoring for both teams.
Tolbert would end the half with nine points as she helped the Wolves build as much a seven-point first half lead, but UWG would take a five-point, 31-24 lead into halftime.
In the third, UWG used their defense to score 12 points off of turnovers. The Wolves outscored the Argos 18-13 in the period and led 49-39 at the start of the final quarter.
The Wolves got the lead to 11 early in the fourth quarter, and then the Argos went on a 12-3 run to make it a 58-56, UWG lead and force the Wolves into a timeout. A 6-0 run by West Georgia out of the timeout made it a 64-56 lead for UWG with just under three minutes left, and by the 1:42 mark, West Florida had tied it up at 65-65.
Trailing by three, Davis got a layup with five seconds left o make it a 68-67, Argonaut lead, and then the Wolves sent UWF to the line where they hit one of two and went up by two. With three seconds remaining, the Wolves would have a chance to tie or win with a final possession, but the Argo defense did not allow UWG to get a shot off and got the come-from-behind win.
Along with Davis and Holliday, Tolbert finished with a career-high 11 points.
Mykah Anderson did a little bit of everything, scoring four points with eight rebounds while dishing out five assists and registering two steals.
West Georgia is now idle until Friday night, December 15 when they head back out on the road for a Gulf South Conference contest at Montevallo.
