Davis Scores 28, Wolves Go Wire-to-Wire in 75-62 Victory

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Behind a 28-point performance from junior Zuriyah Davis, the UWG women's basketball team never trailed on Friday night in a 75-62 road win over the Montevallo Falcons.

"I'm so proud of our team. We've been knocking on the door against the top teams in our conference and we haven't been able to put 40 minutes together, but tonight we led from start to finish," said head coach Joanna Reitz after her team snapped a four-game skid. "When we sputtered, we were able to get back on track, and I'm just so proud of our team."

Davis, who shot 10-of-16 from the field and 8-of-11 from three-point range scored 28 for the second straight game, and added four rebounds to the cause.

"We've talked to Zuriyah about her shot selection, and she took that to heart and she shot the right shots tonight," Reitz said of her guard's performance. "She shot with room and rhythm and made the right decisions with the basketball."

West Georgia (5-4, 2-4 GSC) shot 52.5 percent from the field and poured in 10 three-pointers as a team and held Montevallo (7-3, 5-3 GSC) to their second-worst shooting night through 10 games.

Aliyah Washington got the Wolves' offense going by making the first two field goals, and that along with a pair of first quarter three-pointers from Zuriyah Davis helped UWG build a 19-9 lead after 10 minutes.

It was still a 10-point game at the halftime break, but the Falcons defense clamped down on the Wolves, as UWG shot just 27 percent from the field in the period and turned it over six times. The West Georgia defense in turn held the Falcons to just 18 percent from the field in the first half and led 29-19 at the break.

Montevallo closed the gap in the third quarter, outscoring the Wolves 25-21 in the period. West Georgia led by nine after a Mykah Anderson three on UWG's final possession of the third, but the Falcons answered with a triple of their own to make it a six-point lead heading to the fourth.

Davis turned to another level in the final quarter, going 3-of-3 from three-point range and as a team, the Wolves were 10-of-13 from the field in the final quarter, and led by as much as 19 in the period.

The Wolves got a double-double from Anderson off of the bench, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 boards.

"Mykah had a double-double off the bench in just 20 minutes, and guarded their best player the majority of that time," Reitz said of Anderson's game.

Anderson helped guard the Falcons' Marisa Snodgrass and had her in single-digits until she scored with 3:11 in the game to finish with 11 points.

"She is so versatile, she's so strong, and so tough. We took her out of the starting lineup and she responded. I'm really proud of her," added Reitz.

K'Nari Holliday also scored in double-figures with 12 and had seven rebounds. Jada Powell finished with eight points, six rebounds, and a game-high five assists.

The Wolves have one final game before the Holiday break, dipping into non-conference play against a tough North Georgia team on Tuesday, December 19.

"North Georgia will be our fifth straight game against a team ranked either nationally or in the region," added Reitz. "We love a challenge so we're excited to go on the road and face a tough test against one of the best teams in the Southeast Region," Reitz concluded.

Tip-time in Dahlonega is set for 5:30 p.m.
