Upset Bid Falls Short Against No. 5 Union

CARROLLTON, Ga. The UWG women's basketball team gave the nation's fifth-ranked team a run for their money on Sunday afternoon, but ultimately fell 96-86 to the Union Bulldogs in Gulf South Conference action.

West Georgia (4-2, 1-2 GSC) led by as much as six points in the second half, but in the end Union (8-0, 3-0 GSC) pulled away late, using a slight advantage in second chance points and turnovers to get a road win in Carrollton.

It was an action-packed first half as the Wolves matched the Bulldogs' high-energy pressure defense and the teams combined for 99 points and 32 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

The first half featured four ties and seven lead changes, but it was Union who controlled the game early and built a nine-point lead midway through the opening quarter. The Bulldogs would lead by seven at the quarter break, but the Wolves battled back and hit back-to-back three-pointers, both by Zuriyah Davis, to tie things up at 36-36 with just over six left in the half.

Mykah Anderson would give the Wolves a lead at 40-39 just over a minute later, and Union would close out the half on a 14-6 run, hitting three three-pointers in the final 1:15 of the half to go up 53-46 at the half.

West Georgia's first lead of the second half came on a Becca Ledford three-pointer, and UWG would end up outscoring Union 25-18 in the third, tying things up at 71-71 with a quarter to play.

An early 6-0 run in the fourth quarter capped with a Mykah Anderson layup made it an 81-75 lead for the Wolves, their largest of the game. At the 3:24 mark, Union's Shanique Lucas would hit a game-tying three-pointer to make it 84-84, and from there the Bulldogs would force five UWG turnovers and close out the game on a 12-2 run to claim the victory.

Four Wolves finished in double-figures, led by a career-high 18 from Jada Powell who finished with 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Zuriyah Davis finished with 16, hitting three-pointers. Mykah Anderson, who had a game-high five steals added 11 points while Aliyah Washington scored 10.
