Wolves Drop GSC Contest to West Alabama

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Georgia women's basketball team had their three game win streak snapped on Saturday, after losing to West Alabama 64-62.
Despite a tough first half shooting 26 percent from the field, West Georgia (10-14, 9-12 GSC)  led by four after 20 minutes of play. West Alabama (12-12, 9-11 GSC)  came out and scored the first six points and led the entire first quarter. A Sophia Singer layup with just over two minutes remaining, made it a 12-10 Tiger lead after one.

Just over midway through the second quarter, West Georgia would get their first lead after back-to-back three pointers from Calie Thrower and Katelyn Dunning, who hit two three-pointers in the first half, and led with 13 first half points. A 10-1 run in the back half of the period put the Wolves up by eight points, but the Tigers would cut that deficit in half over the final two minutes and UWG led 30-26 at the break.

Both offenses heated up in the third quarter with UWA shooting nearly 60 percent while the Wolves were just under 50 percent in the period. But it was West Georgia, who after a 39-39 tie with 4:23 left in the third, went on an 11-2 run thanks to five points from Singer, to take a 50-41 lead into the game's final quarter.

The Tigers weren't going away after the late run, cutting the deficit down to three by the final media timeout. As the game reached the final minute, West Georgia had a crucial turnover that gave the Tigers the ball back with 17 seconds left. UWA's Maryanne Logsdon then knocked down a heave at the buzzer with just half a second left to give UWA a road win.

Dunning finished with 15 for the Wolves while Singer had 13. Peace Okeke just missed a double-double with nine points at 12 rebounds.

For West Alabama, Bria Dent had 33 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Tigers.

UWG is back in action on Wednesday, February 15 hosting Thomas in a non-conference clash.
