Wolves Drop GSC Doubleheader to West Alabama

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia Wolves softball team dropped both ends of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Saturday falling 7-5 in game one to the West Alabama Tigers before falling 8-0 in six innings in game two.

The Wolves (1-8, 0-2 GSC) led in game one and were tied going into the final frame before the Tigers earned a last inning win. In game two, the Wolves were no-hit by West Alabama (8-3, 2-0 GSC).

GAME ONE
West Georgia took a 2-0 lead in game one, when R.J. Janke singled home two runs in the second inning to cash in on a pair of walks. Emma Helton and Emerson Miller scored on Janke's single after the pair both got into scoring position on an Isabella Pinto single.

The Tigers responded very quickly with three runs in the top of the third, chasing UWG's starter Calli Hardison. By the end of the frame, West Alabama had just two hits, capitalizing on three walks and two hit batsmen.

UWA's Hannah Mynard added a run in the fourth with a leadoff home run, and the Tigers got a fifth run in the sixth.

In the bottom half, Emma Bailey got her a leadoff home run, the first of the season for the sophomore to cut the deficit to 5-3. A walk and a sac bunt single later had the Wolves in business and the Pinto used her speed to create an error that pushed across two runs and tied things up at 5-5.

The Tigers then scored two on a double to push across the game winning run and claim the series opener.

Emerson Miller, R.J. Janke, and Emma bailey had multi-hit games for the Wolves while Janke went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

GAME TWO
The second game of the twin bill was all West Alabama as the Tigers scored eight runs on six hits and an error while Madison Wright struck out 11 and held West Georgia hitless on the afternoon.

The Tigers got one in the second on an LP Trammell home run and then three in the third on a bases loaded double by Hannah Maynard. Another home run, this one by Ann Marie Stanbridge gave UWA a 6-0 lead, and the Tigers got two in the sixth on a wild pitch and an error.

West Georgia had just one base runner as Emma bailey earned a second inning walk.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Janke now has 11 career multi-hit games, and three this season. Saturday's game was her first three-hit game of 2023, and the fourth time she has done it in a West Georgia uniform.
- Emma Bailey's home run was the fourth of her career.
- It was the second time UWG has been no-hit this season.
