VALDOSTA, Ga. - The UWG Softball team fell 10-4 in Sunday's series finale at Valdosta State as the Blazers completed the sweep of the Wolves at Steel's Diamond.
West Georgia (4-19, 2-10 GSC) led the final game of the series 2-0 at one point, but the Blazers (19-4, 10-2 GSC) high-powered offense slugged four home runs in the game, including a sixth-inning grand slam to break the game open and account for the six-run margin.
Sophomore Rylee Green gave the Wolves a 2-0 lead in the second inning as she slugged her first home run of the season to score Jacelyn Lahr who reached via a walk.
Valdosta State used four singles and a walk to score three in the bottom half and take their first lead of the game. Then in the third, Madison Vandergriff continued her hot streak, slugging her third home run of the season to tie things up at 3-3.
Back-to-back Blazers' home runs from Taylor Macera and Jasmine Stewart put VSU up 5-4 and it was a lead the Blazers would never give back.
Vandergriff added a second RBI on a bases loaded walk to cut the deficit to 5-4, but VSU responded with an Abby Sulte home run in the fourth and a Macera grand slam in the sixth.
West Georgia used two pitchers on the day as Marissa Thompson got the start and took the loss. Katie Morris pitched in relief and was charged with five runs while striking out three in 3.2 innings pitched.
Multi-hit games from Isabella Pinto and Rylee Green paced UWG's offense, who had seven hits on the afternoon including the home runs from Green and Vandergriff.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Vandergriff now leads UWG in home runs (3) and RBI (13) and is batting .311 on the season.
- Pinto registered her fourth multi-hit game of the season and now has 11 runs scored which leads the team.
- Green's home run is the first of the season for her, and the third of her career.Â
West Georgia softball remains on the road this week, traveling to Young Harris for a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
