ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The UWG Wolves softball team fell in a pair of non-conference games on Tuesday against the Eckerd Tritons.
West Georgia (6-21) fell in six innings in game one, by a 13-5 score before falling in a 4-1 game to a red hot Eckerd (20-9) team that has now won 13 straight games after Wednesday's doubleheader sweep.
GAME ONE
The Wolves got the early lead in the first game, scoring two runs in the first inning. It started with back-to-back singles from Madison Vandergriff and Isabella Pinto before a sac bunt by R.J. Janke moved them up one base and set up Rylee Green's two-RBI single into right field.
Eckerd jumped out on top and got a big lead in the second, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs on six hits and an error while also leaving the bases loaded.
Janke got one of the runs back in the third with a home run to left center, but another UWG error in the bottom half gave it right back and made it an 8-3 game.Â
After another Eckerd run in the fourth, the Wolves got two in the fifth. Chandler Mevis led off the inning with a double and that run later scored on an Emerson Miller single. Miller then scored on a throwing error following an Addison Sturdivant single and ensuing stolen base.
A four-run sixth inning for the Tritons ended the game early, handing Macy Ann McKnight the loss. The starter pitched 4.0 innings, giving up nine runs and six earned on nine hits before giving way to the bullpen.
UWG had nine hits in the game with nine different players registering a hit. Green's single and Janke's home run accounted for all three RBIs.
GAME TWO
After 18 combined runs in game one, the Wolves and Tritons cooled off in game two, with the teams combining for five runs, although it was tied 1-1 into the fifth inning.
A Zekylah Boyd triple with two outs in the second would be the first run of the game and another UWG lead as Mevis singled home the freshman to put UWG up 1-0. It was a short-lived lead, however, as the Tritons tagged UWG starter Katie Morris for a run in their half of the second.
It stayed locked at 1-1 until Eckerd pushed across three runs on two hits and an error in the fifth.
UWG got the game-tying run to the plate in the final frame, but could not get the clutch two-out hit.
Emerson Miller was 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot for the Wolves as the freshman accounted for two of UWG's seven hits. Katie Morris pitched the complete game for the Wolves, striking out seven while allowing only one earned run on four hits in six innings.
