Wolves Sweep Friday DH Over Buccaneers

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Georgia contunied their winning ways over the Christian Brothers Buccaneers, sweeping the Friday DH 12-1 in game one and 7-5 in game two.

GAME ONE

Christian Brothers (15-22, 5-16 GSC) got started right away in the top half of the first, cashing in a lead off single from Fowlkes with a sac fly. Starter Peyton Berry settled in, getting three straight outs to limit the damage to just one. In the bottom half, the Wolves (24-7, 12-5 GSC) got a runner on in Anthony Calabro, but could not cash in and took a 1-0 deficit into the second.

Cade Hohl finally broke the seal on the hits and runs column for UWG in the second inning as he blasted a solo HR to straight away center with two outs in the inning. Joseph Glozier kept the inning going with a single, and Jackson Webb sent the second pitch of his at bat into left center, scoring Glozier and putting the Wolves ahead 2-1.

The Wolves wasted no time in the third inning as the leadoff hitter Henry Daniels blasted a home run to begin the inning, and after Calabro was hit by a pitch, the stage was set for Logan Fink to blast the second home run of the inning. Jared Emory and Cooper Prince followed with back-to-back singles, all with still no outs. Hohl followed with a beautiful sac bunt and Glozier added a run with a sac fly, and UWG took a 6-1 lead into the fourth.

The Wolves continued to keep the pressure on, striking for three runs in the inning on a three run mammoth shot from Calabro, his 12th of the season, and UWG led 9-1 going to the fifth.

The Bucs were held hitless until the top of the sixth with a one out single from Brocato, but Berry got the next two outs to preserve the lead. In the bottom half, the Wolves started a rally, but a double play and a flyout ended the threat and kept the lead at 9-1.

CBU got traffic in the seventh inning after McDaniel singled to right field and advanced twice on wild pitches. Later in the inning, Seth Brown walked, putting runners at the corners with just one out. Berry induced a fly out and struck out Matthews to end the inning and keep the Bucs off the scoreboard for the sixth straight inning.

The Wolves immediately answered by getting the bases loaded in the bottom half using a leadoff single, Webb reached on an error, and Tyler Pressnell added an infield single, setting the stage for Daniels. Henry lasered a triple off the right field wall, unloading the bases and ending the game, as the Wolves went up 12-1.

Glozier finished game one as the leading hitter for the Wolves, finishing with a 3-3 line including an RBI. Daniels also finished with a 2-3 day including a home run and a triple with four RBI's. Calabro finished just 1-1 with the one hit being a home run, and added three RBI's of his own. Peyton Berry turned in his best performance of the season, throwing the full seven innings allowing just five hits, one run, two walks, and struck out seven.

GAME TWO

The Bucs wasted no time in the nightcap, striking for three runs in the inning on just two hits. UWG answered right back in the bottom half, getting two back in the inning. Hohl started the inning with a hit by pitch, and two batters later, Calabro started a string of three straight hits, including a two RBI double from Fink. Prince grounded into a double play to end a wild first inning with CBU taking the 3-2 lead into the second.

The Wolves jumped right back on the boards in the second. After all seemed dull due to a double play, Presnell kept the inning alive with a single through the right side, and Hohl followed with a walk. Once again, Daniels cleared the bases with a double down the line, scoring a pair and giving the Wolves the lead in game two.

CBU tied the game right back up in the third with a sac fly and the Wolves were sat down in order to finish the inning, sending us to the fourth with a tie ballgame, 4-4.

UWG got back on track offensively in the fifth inning. Daniels led off the inning with his second home run of the day to put the Wolves back on top, and Calabro followed with a double in the left center gap. Calabro advanced to third on a wild pitch and Fink drew a walk to put runners at the corners. Emory finally made some noise in game two with an RBI single, and Prince delivered a safety squeeze to drive home two more. When the dust cleared in the inning, the Wolves had scored three times and took a 7-4 lead into the sixth.

Neither side got anything in the sixth, and Ryan Whitener stayed in to finish the game in the seventh. After two quick outs, the Bucs did add a solo home run from Dalton Pyzer and back-to-back hits from McDaniel and Gentleman, putting the tying run at second base. Whitener did not fold and got a groundout to end the game, preserving the sweep with a 7-5 victory.

Calabro was the offensive leader in game two, going 3-4 with two runs scored, followed by Prince, Daniels, and Emory who all had two hits a piece. The bullpen trio of Jonathan Hickman, Brady Simpson, and Ryan Whitener combined to allow just five hits and one run over 4.2 innings in the winning effort.

These two teams will be back in action tomorrow at 12 p.m. in the final game of the series.
