Softball Comes Up Short in Friday Twin Bill

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG Softball team fell in both ends of a Friday afternoon doubleheader to the Christian Brother Buccaneers in Gulf South Conference action.

In game one, West Georgia (8-28, 3-14 GSC) led 9-5 but the Bucs scored seven runs in the final two innings to win 13-9. Christian Brothers (8-24, 3-14 GSC) then held UWG to two runs in the second game and came away with an 8-2 victory and a doubleheader sweep.

GAME ONE
The Wolves got three three runs in the first inning of game one as a double steal from Zekylah Boyd and Addison Sturdivant pushed Boyd across for the game's first run and then a JAcelyn Lahr double to the fence right center scored Madison Vandergriff and R.J. Janke.

Christian Brothers would then use a three-run home run and a two-run shot to put up five in the third inning and regain the lead. West Georgia bounced right back with a Chandler Mevis RBI single in the bottom half, but CBU would get it back in the top of the fourth on a leadoff triple and a squeeze play.

It was then five unanswered runs for the Wolves, starting with four in the fourth. It started with one out walks from Vandergriff and Janke and then Emma Nixon singled home a run and a CBU error pushed across another to tie things up at 6-6. Another error on a steal attempt gave the Wolves the 7-6 lead and an RBI groundout from Emma Helton made it 8-6 through four.

With the bases loaded in the fifth, Nixon picked up another RBI to make it 9-6.

CBU then used another two-run home run to inch closer in the sixth, and then took the game in the seventh, scoring five runs on four hits including a fourth home run of the game and a UWG error to make it the final, 13-9 margin.

Calli Hardison was charged with the loss in the circle, giving up three runs in 2.2 innings. In all, UWG used four pitchers in the contest with Macy Ann McKnight getting the start.

Offensively, UWG got a two-hit game from Zekylah Boyd and two-RBI games from Emma Nixon and Jacelyn Lahr.

UWG drew 11 walks in the game, getting eight combined from Vandergriff and Janke in the three and four spots.

GAME TWO
Janke provided all of the Wolves' offense in game two, going 2-for-4 and driving in all three runs for the Wolves. After falling behind 3-0 on a CBU solo shot in the second and two runs on three hits in the third, Janke singled home Chandler Mevis and Isabella Pinto to cut the deficit to one.

From there, it was all CBU as the Bucs scored a run in the fourth, three more in the sixth, and a final run in the seventh.

UWG also added another run in the seventh as Janke doubled to the wall and brought Isabella Pinto all the way around from first to make it 8-3.

Katie Morris was charged with the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings pitched. The Wolves were limited to just five hits in the game with Janke registering two while Pinto, Mevis, and Hardison each collecting one.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Madison Vandergriff did not officially record an at-bat in game one, going 0-for-0 with five walks, setting a new Gulf South Conference single-game record for walks.
- Janke regained the lead in team batting average at .327 and raised her RBI total to 23.
