CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG softball team dropped a pair of heartbreaking games on Saturday, falling in both ends of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader against the Union Bulldogs.
West Georgia (2-15, 1-7 GSC) fell by two runs in both games, including a 10-inning marathon in game two. The losses made it seven consecutive for UWG, while Union (11-7, 6-1 GSC) made it four straight wins.
GAME ONE
The Wolves fell behind 4-0 after two innings in the series opener, knocking out UWG starter Katie Morris. But Camden Smith got the call in relief, and pitching in front of the home crowd for the first time, she delivered five innings of four-hit relief, allowing just one run while inducing nine groundouts.
The offense went to work for UWG in the third as R.J. Janke doubled home a pair to cut the deficit in half.
Union added an insurance run in the seventh, and the Wolves got one in the seventh on a Jacelyn Lahr sacrifice fly.Â
Missed opportunities haunted the Wolves in game one as they stranded eight baserunners including five in the final three frames combined.
West Georgia had five hits in the game, including two from Isabella Pinto.Â
GAME TWO
In what turned into a marathon nightcap, the Wolves took their first lead of the series in the first inning. Trailing 1-0, Madison Vandergriff singled home Pinto to tie things up and then Janke delivered her first home run of the season, a towering, two-run bomb that made it 3-1, Wolves.
Union's standout Macey Neal, who had a first inning home run, doubled home another run for the Bulldogs in the fourth.Â
Pinto's speed forced an error by Union in the fourth inning, which scored Chandler Mevis, and stretched the lead back to two. That's when Madison Vandergriff took Emily Claire Felder deep for a two-run homer and a 6-3 lead.
UWG starting pitcher Marissa Thompson pitched five innings and surrendered 10 hits, but limited the damage allowing just two earned runs and leaving with a 6-3 lead.
Union then got two in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead going into the bottom half of the seventh.
Vandergriff's second home run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up and send the game to extra innings.
Katie Morris came on in relief and took the loss, but gave up just one earned run over 3.2 innings while striking out six of the 11 batters she faced.
After scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth, Union hit a two-run homer in the 10th to take the 9-7 lead, and would hold off UWG in the bottom half.
Vandergriff finished the game 4-for-4 with the two home runs and four RBIs while scoring three runs.
