ROME, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Softball team won game one of a three game series against Shorter University by a final score of 13-5 on Friday afternoon.
West Georgia (11-32, 6-16 GSC) snaps a two-game losing streak after beating Shorter (6-37, 1-23 GSC) recording 13 hits, their highest total of the season.
The Wolves added one run in the bottom of the first after a single to left field from Madison Vandergriff, which resulted in Zakylah Boyd scoring. Shorter, however, was able to add three runs in the initial frame.
In the bottom of the second, Shorter extended their lead to 5-1 after a series of walks resulted in two additional runs.
The Wolves added another run in the third after Boyd hit a single, which allowed Chandler Mevis to score. Shortly after, Emma Nixon hit her third home run of the season and knotted the game up at five before heading into the fourth.
The game stayed tied until the Wolves added three more runs in the top of the fifth. Boyd started the inning with a hit and advanced to second base after RJ Janke advanced to first on an error committed by Shorter's third baseman. Boyd and Janke would both go on to advance on stolen bases. Emerson Miller would soon advance to first base after an error, which gave Boyd and Janke opportunities to add two runs for the Wolves, pushing the lead 8-5.
The Wolves added their ninth and 10th runs in the top of the sixth after Boyd and Mevis both stole bases which resulted in scores, and in the seventh, UWG added an additional three runs before shutting out Shorter in the game's final frame.
These two teams will finish the series tomorrow with a double header beginning at 2:00 pm.
