Wolves Drop Road Contest at Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. The UWG women's basketball team dropped a second consecutive contest on Saturday, falling to Mississippi College on the road in Gulf South Conference action.

West Georgia (10-6, 6-6 GSC) shot 43.4 percent, but again turned the ball over too much and shot poorly from the free throw line in the sixth loss of the season.

It was another 20-plus-point performance from Zuriyah Davis as the junior finished with 24 points, eclipsing the 20-point mark for the eighth time this season. Davis also went over 300 points on the season.

West Georgia took a little bit to settle in on the road, turning it over six times in the opening quarter. The Wolves hung tough, however, and trailed 15-10 after a quarter of play.

The offense heated up a bit in the second, as the Wolves led briefly early in the quarter. UWG hit three three-pointers in the period, two of this coming from Davis. The junior finished the first half with 10 points, but the Wolves trailed by six at the break.

Mississippi College would get their lead to 10 at one point in the third quarter, but a 16-4 run capped by a Katelyn Dunning layup gave the Wolves a 50-48 lead before late free throws by MC sent the game to the final quarter tied, 50-50.

There were five lead changes in the final quarter, and at the two-minute mark, Dunning hit a pair of free throws that pulled the Wolves within one at 65-64. The Wolves then hit just one more basket in the final two minutes and had a pair of costly turnovers down the stretch.

Two other Wolves, Dunning and Sydne Tolbert, finished in double-figures with 10 points each while K'Nari Holliday's six rebounds led the way on the glass.

UWG now has a seven-day break from game action before returning home for a January 20 matchup with Montevallo at 2 p.m. at The Coliseum.
