Eighth-Ranked Wolves Blowout Argonauts at Home to Extend Win Streak to Nine

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Men's Basketball team extended their winning streak to nine on Wednesday night after an 88-57 win over the West Florida Argonauts.

UWG (18-2, 14-2 GSC) dismantled UWF (6-14, 4-12 GSC) in the second half as the Wolves held the Argonauts to 31.4 percent shooting and 0-7 from three in the period, leading to West Georgia out scoring West Florida by 22 points. For the game, UWG held UWF to 31.4 percent from the floor and 1-20 from three.

This was a complete win for the guys," said head coach Dave Moore. "I thought we really responded in the second half and we focused on us and defended how we're capable of defending on top of pushing the basketball in transition. We had 20 assists to 11 turnovers and 10 steals. That means that we were engaged and playing together and that's what we need to do."

West Georgia came out the gate fast as the Wolves made seven of their first ten shots to take a 17-6 lead into the first media timeout. After scoring 17 points in the first four minutes, UWG's offense went cold as they missed 10 of their next 12 shots, leading to West Florida cutting West Georgia's lead down to three with 9:08 left in the period. With their lead at three, UWG struggled to create separate from UWF before a bucket from Tamaury Releford sparked a 10-4 run for the Wolves, leading to a nine-point lead at the half for West Georgia.

After starting the period 7-10 from the floor, UWG shot 37.5 percent from the field in the first half but held West Florida to 33 percent and 8.3 percent from three which led to their nine-point advantage.

West Georgia's second half masterclass began with Zawdie Jackson and Amari Davis scoring UWG's first 13 points, propelling the Wolves to a 56-39 lead, six minutes into the period. About six minutes later, West Georgia got their lead up to 20 after a put back dunk from Michael Griffin. Griffin's dunk began an 11-0 run for UWG which gave them their largest lead of the night at 31 points. From there on out, both teams emptied their benches as the Wolves cruised to an 88-57 win.

Jackson led the way with a game-high 16 points and seven assists while Camron Donatlan and Releford both recorded double-doubles.

"I thought we defended and rebounded very well and that's what we needed to do," coach Moore continued. "West Florida can really rebound. Xavier Washington is the best rebounder in the league by the numbers and I thought Kolten Griffin did a terrific job on him."

K. Griffin helped hold one of the best bigs in the GSC, Xavier Washington, to six points and 0-9 from the floor.

West Georgia will be back in action on Saturday when they begin a three-game road trip in Valdosta, GA on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. matchup against the Valdosta State Blazers.
