Offense Explodes in 90-62 Road Win at Shorter

ROME, Ga. – The UWG women's team secured their fifth consecutive victory on Saturday, dominating the Shorter Hawks in a 90-62 Gulf South Conference road win.

West Georgia (9-4, 5-4 GSC) put up 90 points for the third time this season, and notched their largest margin of victory, handing the Hawks their 11th straight loss.

"We're continuing to build confidence, especially from the free throw line, and that's an area of growth for us," said head coach Joanna Reitz following Saturday's win.

The Wolves shot 12-of-13 from the free throw line against Shorter (1-13, 0-10 GSC), setting a season-best in free throw percentage. UWG finished the game 34-of-62 from the field while hitting 10 three-pointers.

Mykah Anderson had the first eight points for UWG, hitting her first three attempts including two three-pointers. From there, it was a solid distribution of scoring as five other Wolves scored in the period, helping UWG shoot 50 percent from the field in the opening quarter. A Katelyn Dunning three-pointer at the buzzer put the Wolves up three after one.

The second quarter was all UWG as the Wolves scored 33 points, with Zuriyah Davis scoring 15 in the period by herself. As a team, the Wolves finished the first half shooting 64.5 percent from the field and 50 percent from three with seven made long range field goals and led by 24 at the break.

It was all West Georgia in the second half, as the Wolves hit the 30-point advantage mark early in the final quarter at 74-44.

West Georgia was able to empty the bench over the final six minutes of the game as every player that dressed saw the floor, including Taiylor Williams who played five minutes and got her first career collegiate points.

"We wanted to be able to play our bench today, and our starting five and our top seven did a good job of giving us a sizeable lead so that we could do that, so I'm proud of the group," Reitz added.

The Wolves led by as much as 33 points at the 6:58 mark as Calie Thrower's three-pointer accounted for an 80-47 lead.

"We talk about passing up good shots for great shots, and I love to see 17 assists and 12 turnovers," said Reitz. "If we can take care of the ball like that, we have enough firepower out there to score the basketball."

The Wolves got a game-high 26 points from Zuriyah Davis who had at least 20 for the sixth time this season. Mykah Anderson and Jada Powell also got into double-figures with 11 and 10, respectively.

Katelyn Dunning had a career-high seven assists while Sydne Tolbert dished out six.

Reitz and the Wolves now brace for a huge clash at The Coliseum on Monday night against the Lee Flames. The game features the GSC's top two scorers in UWG's Davis and Lee's Mallory Hampton.

"Lee is a powerhouse in this conference, they run a great system on both sides of the ball, and Hampton is a special player and really makes them go," said Reitz. "So we'll put together a good game plan, get rested and recovered, and I know our players will be ready."

Tip-time for Monday's contest against Lee is set for 5:30 p.m.
