CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Men's Basketball team won their third consecutive game on Monday night after an 80-66 win over the Lee Flames.
Camron Donatlan put on masterful performance as the senior finished with 36 points and 10 rebounds on 14-20 shooting, marking the first 35-point double-double since Marquill Smith back in February 14, 2019. Donatlan led a UWG (12-2, 8-2 GSC) offense that shot 54.7% from the floor, propelling the Wolves over the Flames (9-3, 7-3 GSC) for their eight GSC win of the season.
"Cam was a big spark for us tonight," said head coach Dave Moore. "He was consistent all the way through and he was in attack mode and he never really wavered from that. "Lee came back in that second half and we knew that that was a possibility because they are a really good team. They're really well coached and have graduate students and veteran players all through the roster, so they were not going to quit playing but we defended and rebounded which won us the game."
West Georgia got out to a fast start in the first half, courtesy of Donatlan who scored 15 of UWG's first 23 points, leading to a 23-3 lead for the Wolves, nine minutes in. As the score represented, Lee couldn't get anything going offensively until a layup from Jamarcus Wilkins got them going. The bucket from Wilkins sparked a 10-0 Flames run before a three from Marlon Smith halted Lee's momentum. Later in the half, back-to-back baskets from Donatlan and Zawdie Jackson got West Georgia's lead back up to 13 with 1:52 left before the Flames used a 7-2 run to cut the Wolves lead down to eight, going into halftime.
UWG shot 51.7% from the field and 42.9% from three in the period while holding Lee to 30.3% from the floor and 20% from three.
After an eight-point, five-rebound first half, Amari Davis got things started for West Georgia in the second half with a layup before, beginning a string of back-and-forth basketball. With the Wolves leading 47-37, a pair of free throws from Cole Fisher sparked a 12-0 run, extending UWG's lead to 59-37 with 12:54 left to play. The Wolves held a double digit lead all the way to the 6:52 mark before a three from Lee's Willie Walton made it a 69-61 game. After trading buckets, West Georgia led 73-65 with 2:57 left to play before closing the game on a 7-1 run to clinch an 80-66 win.
Along with Donatlan's career performance, Jackson finished with 15 points and five assists while Davis recorded 12 points on 6-6 shooting.
"We were in attack mode from the jump and that's what we needed to do against these guys," coach Moore finished.
West Georgia will now turn around and play Delta State on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in another primetime GSC matchup inside The Coliseum.
