Football Ends Inaugural Division I Season With First UAC Victory

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The University of West Georgia's inaugural Division I season ended with a big victory on Saturday as the Wolves defeated Utah Tech 34-31 for UWG's first ever United Athletic Conference victory.

West Georgia (4-7, 1-7 UAC) outscored the Trailblazers 20-7 in the final quarter to erase a halftime deficit and win the season finale over Utah Tech (1-10, 1-6 UAC).

The Wolves used a balanced offensive attack, solid special teams, and three takeaways, including a 50-yard interception return by Solomanie Bambara to complete the comeback.

Davin Wydner led UWG's offense going 15-of-19 for 197 yards and two touchdowns through the air while the Wolves rushed for 168 yards including 60 from Rajaez Mosley, 45 from Wydner, and 37 from Belcher. Chance Gagnon added six points with two crucial field goals.

After the West Georgia defense forced a punt on the Trailblazers' opening drive, UT's defense picked off Quincy Casey on the Wolves' second offensive play. Utah Tech's offense quick capitalized on the short field, scoring on the fourth play of the drive to go up 7-0.

A fumble on West Georgia's next drive resulted in another short field and Utah Tech once again capitalized and went up 14-0 less than 10 minutes into the contest.

West Georgia then got on the board, using the legs of Davin Wydner and Rajaez Mosley to drive 75 yards on eight plays. Mosley had five rushes for 20 yards combined while Wydner had a 47-yard rush before ending the drive with a one-yard touchdown rush to cut the deficit in half.

Utah Tech scored again four plays into the second quarter to go back up by two scores, leading 21-7.

It looked like it would be a one score game at the half after Wydner found TJ Lockley for a 38-yard score with 1:33 left in the second, but Utah Tech drove down in the final minute and kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired to take a 24-14 lead into the break.

The Wolves scored the only points of the third quarter, scoring 10 points on a 37-yard field goal by Chance Gagnon after a Jay Carter interception and then tying it up on a 32-yard touchdown from Wydner to Chase Belcher.

Early in the final quarter, West Georgia took their first lead of the game on a 44-yard field goal and extended the lead to 10 on Bambara's interception return.

Utah Tech had one more score in them to cut the lead back to three with 6:47 remaining, but the UWG offense was able to get four first downs and run out all of the remaining time to earn the historic road victory.

The defense limited Utah Tech to just 143 yards of total offense in the second half, and the defensive effort was led by Preston Puni's nine tackles while Anthony Rochester and Malachi Williams each had nine.

West Georgia wraps up the 2024 season with a 4-7 overall record.
