CARROLLTON, Ga. - Records fell at University Stadium on Saturday as the West Georgia Wolves defeated Lincoln (CA) 88-12 in non-conference football action.
West Georgia (3-6) scored a single-game scoring record with 88 points against Lincoln (0-9), besting the previous record of 69 points. In the process, UWG had two defensive touchdowns, and put up 533 total yards on the offensive side of the ball.
Lincoln came out of the gate and marched 73 yards on 10 plays to take an early lead, but the Wolves then rattled off 44 unanswered points and then led by 39 at halftime. The first of those points came in an unconventional way as Myti Johnson blocked the Oakland's PAT attempt and Jelen Lee jetted 83 yards for the two-point conversion.
Rajaez Mosley, who would eclipse the 2,000 career rushing yard mark on the day, then scored one of his two touchdowns to make it 9-6, and the Dylan Gary scored on consecutive drives. First, the Sugar Hill native would haul in a 22-yard pass from Davin Wydner before scoring on a 94-yard completion from Quincy Casey on the next drive to make it a 23-6 lead.
Next was Mosley scoring again, followed by Latrelle Murrell finding the endzone at the 5:48 mark of the second quarter to stretch the advantage to 37-6.
West Georgia scored their first defensive touchdown of the season on Lincoln's ensuing drive. Preston Puni forced a fumble that was recovered by Anthony Rochester and ran in from 32 yards out.
Lincoln then scored for the second time of the day, completing a 61-yard touchdown pass, but would fail on a two-point try.
The final score of the first half would come on the legs of Wydner as the sophomore ran it in for his sixth touchdown on the ground this season.
In the second half, West Georgia scored 37 points and pitched a second half shutout. UWG opened the second half scoring with Casey finding Cedric Seabrough for a one yard score and then added a Chance Gagnon field goal from 28 yards at the 6:41 mark of the third quarter. Less than a minute later, UWG turned a Jamie Speight interception into points as Murrell ran it in from the one to make it a 66-12 game.
Speight then picked off another pass and returned it 44 yards for the score to make it 73-12 and break the single-game points record.
West Georgia's final two touchdowns came on the legs of quarterback Richie Lankford and later on Murrell's third score of the game.
Both Murrell and Mosley had 100-plus yard games on the ground while Gary had a big day in the receiving game, catching three passes for 147 yards and two scores, all in the first half.
Defensively, UWG had the three takeaways, allowed just 209 yards including only 15 rushing yards. Anthony Rochester and Myti Johnson, the latter of which made his first career start, led the defense with six tackles each.
Notable Numbers
- Gary's 94-yard touchdown reception is the second-longest reception in school history behind Chad Walker's 96-yard score against Albany State on September 17, 1994.
- Murrell's second-quarter touchdown was the Douglasville native's first career touchdown.
- Mosley became the seventh player in school history to hit the 2,000 yard mark and the first since Hall of Famer Devontae Jackson who played from 2015-18.
- Speight is the first UWG player with two interceptions in a game since Korie Rogers had two interceptions against West Florida in 2017.
- West Georgia's 88 points were the most points scored in school history and the most points scored by an FCS team this season, besting Stephen F. Austin's 77 points scored against North American on August 29.
