Wolves Drop Midweek Contest to Hurricanes

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Baseball team fell to the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes, 17-2, on Tuesday night.

West Georgia (5-6, 2-1 GSC) couldn't find their rhythm in any phase of the game as UWG only mustered two runs on six hits, while committing three errors and walking 12 GSW (8-3, 0-0 PBC) batters.

It was a bullpen day for coach Smith and the Wolves as Ronny Piepmeier got the official start.

Piepmeier found himself in trouble early as the righty walked the first batter of the game, setting the stage for a two-run inning for the Hurricanes.

West Georgia got a run back in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of a solo home run from Luke Hatcher before newly inserted Brady Simpson retired Georgia Southwestern in the top of second to send us to the bottom half.

UWG couldn't push a run across in the bottom of the second, giving GSW an opportunity to add to their lead in the top of the third. The Hurricanes did just that as Georgia Southwestern added a run after an-RBI-single from Noah Roberts, putting the Wolves in a 3-1 hole.

UWG got a run back in their half of the third courtesy of an RBI-single from Cooper Prince, making it a 3-2 game.

After both pitching staffs stifled the opposing offenses in the next two innings, West Georgia loaded up the bases with no outs in the fifth but couldn't score any runs, keeping their deficit at 3-2 as we went to the sixth.

In the top of the sixth, Coach Smith called on Mike Schicker out of the bullpen. Schicker struggled to get through the inning as the righty walked the lead off man before walking another another batter, putting runners on second and third with GSW's leader in home runs, Calvin Alexander, due up. Moments later, Alexander belted a three run homer to left field to extend the Hurricanes' lead to 6-2.

Throughout the remainder of the game, the Wolves couldn't push another run across while Georgia Southwestern scored 11 runs in the ninth inning, taking a 17-2 win back to Americus.

West Georgia will return to conference play this weekend for a three-game series against the Shorter Hawks, beginning on Friday at 5:00 PM.
