Softball Falls in Both Ends of High-Scoring Twin Bill

CARROLLTON, Ga. - There was no shortage of runs on Saturday at University Softball Field, but the UWG softball team fell in both ends of a high-scoring doubleheader to the visiting Lee Flames in Gulf South Conference action.

West Georgia (8-10, 3-5 GSC) scored 22 runs combined in the doubleheader, but Lee (9-4, 5-3 GSC) put up 28 runs on the day winning game one 15-10, and hanging on to a 13-12 victory in game two after West Georgia made a furious comeback after trailing 11-0 in the fifth.=

GAME ONE: Lee 15, West Georgia 10
The Wolves led for much of the series opener, but it was the Flames who scored first with a single run in the first inning, but the Wolves took the lead in the second on a three-run home run from Madison Vandergriff.

Zekylah Boyd's two-out, two-RBI double in the third made it a 5-1 lead, and Lee struck back with a single run in the fourth, followed by a Tamia Young RBI in the bottom half to push the lead back to three at 6-3.

In the fifth, Lee scored one and UWG scored two, and that sent the game to the sixth with the Wolves up four.

Lee's six-run sixth gave the Flames their first lead since the first inning, but the Wolves scored two in the bottom half to tie things up at 10-10. The Flames tacked on five in the seventh, hitting two of their three home runs in the game to make it a 15-10 final.

Vandergriff finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBIs while Boyd also had a three-hit game and drove in two. Blaire Bizette added two hits in the game.

Calli Hardison pitched well for five innings before running into trouble in the sixth, but the sophomore struck out a career-high eight batters. Marissa Thompson took the loss in the circle for UWG giving up five earned in an inning of work.

GAME TWO: Lee 13, West Georgia 12
The Flames jumped out to an 11-0 lead in game two, scoring two in the first, three in the third, three in the fourth, and three more in the fifth to put the Wolves on the brink of being run-ruled through five.

West Georgia responded with a 12-run fifth, recording their second 12-run inning in as many years as the Wolves put up 12 in a 14-1 victory over Young Harris in 2023.

An error started the scoring for UWG, and then Kaprice Leonard had a bases-clearing double that scored three to make to 11-4, followed by a walk and the speed of Zekylah Boyd forcing another error that allowed the fifth run. Bizette then singled home two and Makayla Register brought her in with a triple, cutting the deficit to 11-8. Jacelyn Lahr then singled home a run, followed by RBI singles from Rylee Green and Vandergriff, before two runs scored on a Megan Waites single to make it 12-11 in favor of UWG.

In all, UWG sent 17 batters to the plate in the inning and got 17 hits.

Lee tied it up with a run in the sixth and hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh before retiring the Wolves in order for the seventh to clinch the series victory.

Register had three hits in the loss, while Kaprice Leonard's three-RBIs led the Wolves in that category. Waites, Bizette, and Lahr each had two RBIs in game two.

UP NEXT
The Wolves and Flames meet tomorrow for game three with first pitch set for 11 a.m. from University Softball Field.
