Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - The 2023-24 UWG women's basketball season came to a close on Saturday in Cleveland, MS with the Wolves falling 64-42 to the Delta State Lady Statesmen in Gulf South Conference action.
Saturday is the final day of regular season play in the 2023-24 Gulf South Conference basketball season. The Wolves clinched a spot in the postseason conference tournament with a win on Wednesday against Mississippi College, but the final bracket for the 2024 GSC tournament will be released later this evening..
The opening quarter was a defensive battle early followed by a furious comeback for the Wolves as the period closed. West Georgia shot just 25 percent from the floor through the first eight minutes of the period, trailing 18-9 with 2:10 left in the quarter. The Wolves closed out the final two minutes of the quarter with a 6-2 run, finishing off with a
Katelyn Dunning layup and subsequent free throw as she was fouled on the play, cutting the DSU lead to 20-16 heading into the second period.
The Lady Statesmen returned the favor in the first four minutes of the second quarter, going on a 7-2 run to start the period.
Sydne Tolbert stopped the run with a jumper at the 5:38 mark, then hit a free-throw as she was fouled on the play to make it 27-21. Over the final five minutes of the period, the Lady Statesmen went on a 10-6 run, taking a 37-27 lead into the halftime break.
Sydne Tolbert led all UWG scorers with six points in the opening half.
In the second, the Wolves continued to struggle from the field as Delta State outscored UWG 25-10 over the first 16 minutes of the half, shooting just 19.2 percent from the field during that span.
Aliyah Washington was a bright spot for the Wolves, scoring seven points in the fourth quarter alone to lead the Wolves in scoring with 10 points in the game.
West Georgia finished the 2023-24 season with a 16-12 overall record and a 12-12 record against Gulf South Conference competition.
