Wolves Drop Saturday Double Header to Statesmen

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Baseball team dropped Games Two and Three to the Delta State Statesmen on Saturday.

West Georgia (16-17, 9-9 GSC) struggled defensively, recording eight errors in the two games, propelling Delta State (21-14, 12-6 GSC) to their series sweep.

GAME ONE: DSU 9, UWG 8

Brendan Parks got the start for West Georgia and didn't get a lot of help from his defense as Delta State scored three runs off of two UWG errors, putting the Wolves in a 3-0 deficit in the first inning.

In the second inning, a pair of bunt singles, a walk, an error, and a wild pitch led to the Statesmen scoring two more runs, giving them a 5-0 lead.

The Wolves got on the board in their half of the third inning which began with Michael Rich drawing a lead-off walk. With two outs in the inning, Jack Witmer and Luke Hatcher recorded back-to-back RBI-doubles to cut Delta State's lead to 5-2.

In the top of the fourth, the Statesmen's loaded up the bases with no outs on Parks, forcing head coach Jeff Smith to make a move to the bullpen as he brought in Jack Rasmussen. Rasmussen struck out the first two batters before getting a groundout to get out of the jam unscathed.

The Statesmen added to their lead in the fifth after an RBI-single from Brett Burrell and another error from West Georgia made it a three-run inning for Delta State, extending their lead to 8-2.

The Wolves got two runs back in their half of the inning courtesy of a solo home run from Cade Hohl and an RBI-double from Luke Hatcher, making it an 8-4 game as we went to the sixth.

After both offenses were held scoreless in the sixth inning, the Statesmen added another run to extend their lead to 9-4 in their half of seventh.

In the bottom half, UWG got back within three after sacrifice flies from Jared Emory and Walt McConnell.

Ronny Piepmeier was inserted into the game in the sixth inning and threw 3.0 innings, striking out six hitters to keep the Wolves' deficit at three as the game progressed to the ninth.

In the bottom half of the ninth, Witmer led the inning off with a walk before Hatcher singled, advancing Witmer to third. Emory was due up next and recorded a sacrifice fly, scoring Witmer and bringing Tyler Presnell up to the plate. Presnell singled to score Hatcher, making it a one run game. With the tying run at first, Delta State brought in Josh Hill who got Patrick McCullough to roll into a double play, ending the game.

Hatcher recorded a team-high three hits and two RBIs.

GAME THREE: DSU 9, UWG 7

Will Dean got the start for West Georgia in Game Three of the series and surrendered three runs in the first inning after a three-run home run from Delta State's Dylan Coleman.

The Statesmen's starter Logan Cromer kept the Wolves scoreless through the first two innings and got another run of support from his offense in the top of the third after Coleman hit his second homer of the game.

UWG got on the board in their half of the third after back-to-back RBI-singles from Hatcher and Emory, cutting their deficit to 4-2. Delta State quickly responded in the top of the fourth as Dylan Bender hit a solo home run to put the Statesmen back up by three.

The West Georgia offense threatened in the bottom of the fifth as they loaded the bases, but couldn't push any runs across, keeping their deficit at 5-2.

Jonathan Hickman was called in from the bullpen and retired the side without issues in the sixth, bringing the Wolves' bats back to the plate where UWG took their first lead of the series.

Mason Cooper worked a one out walk before Ladner singled with Prince due up. The lefty doubled to left field, scoring Cooper before Witmer came through with an RBI-double of his own to even the score at five. Later in the inning, Witmer scored off a wild pitch, giving West Georgia a 6-5 lead as the game went to the seventh.

Hickman remained in the ball game with a chance the shut the door. Hickman retired the first batter before an error put Delta State's Burrell on first. Three straight singles from the Statemen's scored two Delta State runners, giving them a 7-6 lead. Moments later, another single from the Statesmen scored two more runs to extend their lead to 9-6.

UWG scored one run in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of an RBI-single from Prince but that's all the Wolves got in the inning as they fell, 9-7, in Game Three.

Prince recorded three hits and two RBIs while Witmer added two RBIs of his own.

West Georgia will be back in action on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. for a non-conference matchup against Georgia Southwestern.
