Softball Splits with VSU to Open Senior Weekend

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG softball team split their Saturday doubleheader against Valdosta State, winning game one 8-5 before falling in game two by a 12-3 decision.

West Georgia (19-33, 8-21 GSC) got a great pitching performance from Calli Hardison and a two home run game from Blaire Bizette in the series opener, but Valdosta State (29-20, 19-10 GSC) got some revenge in game two, slugging four home runs to run-rule the Wolves.

GAME ONE
The Wolves fell behind in both games, and in the first inning it was Abby Sulte who put the Blazers up with a two-run home run in the first inning. The Wolves responded with two of their own as R.J Janke dumped a two-RBI single into left center to tie the game.

Madison Vandergriff slugged a solo shot in the second inning to put UWG up 3-2, and then Hardison settled in, putting up zeroes in the second, third, and fourth innings. The Blazers got a solo shot in the fifth to tie things up, but in the bottom half, Bizette led off with a home run before a throwing error allowed a fifth run to score and UWG went up 5-3.

In the sixth, Bizette hit a rocket, three-run home run to put the Wolves up 8-3. Suite hit her 27th home run of the season for VSU in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Hardison went the distance and earned a series opening win.

The sophomore, Hardison, gave up the five runs on eight hits, with all the runs coming via the home run. She struck out four and pitched around three walks.

Bizette's 2-for-3 game with four RBIs led the way for UWG's offense while Janke chipped in with two RBIs.

GAME TWO
Valdosta State built a 10-0 lead through two and a half innings before an Isabella Pinto single put UWG on the board in the third.

The Blazers then got two more runs in the fifth to stretch the lead to 12-1, but Pinto picked up another RBI on a sac fly in the fifth, and then Makayla Register drove in one with an RBI-double.

UWG's offense was limited to just five hits in game two while VSU had seven hits including the four home runs,
