Softball Extends Win Streak to Five With Sweep of Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The UWG softball team extended their winning streak to five games after a doubleheader sweep of Georgia College on Wednesday evening in Milledgeville.

West Georgia (16-22) won game one by a two-run margin before scoring 18 runs and holding off a late comeback in game two over Georgia College (20-20).

GAME ONE: West Georgia 6, Georgia College 4
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, UWG mounted a late comeback in game one, scoring a run in the sixth, and four in the seventh to claim a 6-4 victory in the opener.

UWG got on the board in the third on an RBI-single by Megan Waites to tie the game at 1-1, and Georgia College then regained the lead with a two-run home run in the fourth. After a leadoff walk in the sixth by Blaire Bizette, Madison Vandergriff doubled in the run to cut the deficit to just one.

Rylee Green was the hero in the seventh as she slugged a pinch hit, two-run home run that put the Wolves up 4-3, and then Zekylah Boyd's speed created a run forcing back-to-back errors by the Georgia College defense. A third GCSU error in the inning made it 6-3 and UWG held off the Bobcats in the seventh, allowing just one run to take the first game of two.

West Georgia had six hits in the game and defensively was error free. Boyd had two hits including a triple and scored two runs in the game while Green's two RBIs lead the way in that category.

Marissa Thompson pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits in the game and surrendering four earned runs.

GAME TWO: West Georgia 18, Georgia College 14
West Georgia's offense took it to another level in the nightcap, racking up 19 hits combined and pushing across 18 runs. The Wolves never trailed in the game and scored two runs in the opening inning on a Makayla Register two-run home run.

After GCSU tied things up in the first, Tamia Young singled home Emerson Miller to make it a 3-2 game in the middle of the second. In the third, UWG got four runs, starting the inning with a single from Boyd, double from Waites, and a triple from Bizette, making it 5-2. Vandergriff then hit a sac fly to make it 6-2 and Addison Sturdivant also got an RBI on a single up the middle.

The Bobcats struck for two in the bottom of the third and then the Wolves scored their eighth run on a passed ball in the fourth and then struck for another four spot in the top of the fifth. The Wolves loaded the bases with three walks before Register cleared the bases with a tripled later scored on a Vandergriff single to make it 12-4.

Georgia College responded with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

It was a six-run sixth for UWG, scoring all six runs with two outs in the inning. Kaprice Leonard picked up an RBI in the inning, as did Rylee Green with Blaire Bizette picking up two RBIs on another extra-base hit. Georgia College then scored seven runs in their half of the seventh, nearly pulling off an epic comeback, but fell four runs short.

Bizette and Miller each had three hits in the win with Bizette picking up three RBIs. Register had two hits and five RBIs with Waites and RJ Janke also recording two hits.

UWG used three pitchers in the win with Makayla Register picking up the win by pitching 2.1 innings of relief.
