OXFORD, Ala. - The University of West Georgia Baseball team fell 10-2 in their GSC Opening Round matchup to the top-seeded Lee Flames on Friday.
Like most teams this season, West Georgia (23-26, 14-16 GSC) struggled to contain a talented Lee (37-14, 23-7 GSC) offense as the Wolves surrendered 10 runs on nine walks and eight hits, leading to their eight-run loss.
Seth Dudley got the start for West Georgia while Lee started their ace and reigning GSC Pitcher of the Year Jack Nedrow.
The Wolves loaded up the bases on Nedrow in the top of the second after a walk from Jack Witmer, a ground-rule double from Sam Ladner, and a hit by pitch from Beau Brand. Cade Hohl came up to the dish and struck out swinging on three pitches as the Flames' right hander worked his way out of the jam to keep the game scoreless.
After two clean innings from Dudley, the righty ran into trouble in the third as Lee struck for three runs in the inning to take a 3-0 lead into the fourth.
Two innings later, the Flames added to their lead as their center fielder and six-hole hitter, JJ Williams hit a two-run home run, giving Lee a 5-0 in the fifth.
In the sixth, West Georgia took advantage of a throwing error from the Flames' catcher, Riley Black as Jared Emory was able to make his way all the way to third base after an errant throw on a drop third strike. Two batters later, Jackson Webb put UWG on the board with a sacrifice fly that scored Emory, making it a 5-1 game.
After a five pitch walk to begin the bottom half of the sixth, Dudley's afternoon was finished. Head coach Jeff Smith called on Jack Rasmussen, out of the bullpen, who later surrendered a three-run home run to second team All-GSC selection, Cam Suto.
Lee continued to add on to their lead in the bottom of the seventh after Luke Collier scored off a wild pitch, putting the Wolves in a 9-1 hole.
A solo home run from Brandon Daniels in the bottom of the eighth made it 10-1 Lee before UWG added a run in the top of the ninth via a sac-fly from Hatcher. That's all the Wolves would score in the final frame as they fell 10-2 to the Flames.
West Georgia will now play Montevallo tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. EST in a win or go home contest.
