Wolves Dominate Nicholls in Tournament Finale

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The West Georgia Wolves volleyball team ended the weekend in dominant fashion vs Nicholls State, defeating the Colonels 3-1 in the final day of the Golden Eagle Invitational.

UWG (6-4, 0-0 ASUN) dominated Nicholls State (4-5, 0-0 Southland) in a four set match by the help of Sanai Young, Zoë LaBreche, and Mary Morgan Formby who combined for 37 kills on a .300 hitting percentage.

"This group continues to grow and learn, and we love seeing the team bounce back this morning." said head coach Kara Hellmann.

West Georgia jumped out to an early 10-5 lead over the Colonels, which led to a Nicholls timeout. Left unfazed by this timeout, the Wolves continued to dominate the set. Young would contribute three kills on a .429 hitting percentage and one block that would allow UWG to control every facet of the match early on. The Wolves would go on to finish Nicholls State, 25-21 to take a 1-0 lead in the matchup.

The second set was much closer than the first, but this did not stop West Georgia from keeping their foot on the gas early. Mary Morgan Formby and Marley Staats attribute to UWG's strong offensive performance. With a combined 10 kills in the set, this was crucial for the Wolves to finish off Nicholls State who wouldn't go down without a fight. As it seemed West Georgia was in control of the set, Nicholls did not give up and was able to tie the set 23-23.  With Nicholls fighting strong on the back of Leah Linares Castro, they were able to squeak past West Georgia to win the set, 33-31.

The Wolves coming out with a vengeance were able to silence the Colonels early by going on a 16-7 run to start the set. West Georgia had five aces throughout the set, UWG was able to carry this momentum into absolutely dominating Nicholls State and defeating them 25-12.

West Georgia would hold on to the momentum built throughout the match to finish off Nicholls State in dominating fashion. Zoë LaBreche, Mary Morgan Formby, and Sanai Young would lead the way for the Wolves with crucial kills in the fourth set to allow the Wolves to prevail over the Colonels.

"This has been the toughest overall weekend of competition so far in our young season. To see this team embrace the challenges and continue to improve is very encouraging." Hellmann concluded.

West Georgia will be back in action next weekend at the Spartan Classic. The event begins on Friday, with a matchup against the University of Idaho at 12:00 p.m.
