CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Volleyball team dropped the finale of the 2024 UWG Tournament at the hands of Georgia State, 3-0, on Saturday.
UWG (4-2, 0-0 ASUN) struggled to slow down the Georgia State (4-2, 0-0 SBC) offense as the Panthers accumulated 45 kills on a .318 hitting percentage compared to 25 kills on a .102 hitting percentage for the Wolves.
West Georgia got out to a fast start in the first set, taking a 5-0 lead in a blink which forced Georgia State to burn their first timeout. Out the timeout, the Panthers responded as they went on a massive 18-5 run, putting the set out of reach at 19-11. The Wolves couldn't find their way back into the set and fell, 25-13.
The second set was the most competitive game of the match as the two teams were knotted at 10 to start. Moments later, the Panthers created separation from the Wolves, using an 8-2 run to put UWG in a 18-13 hole. Kills from Marley Staats, Alex Strating, and Mary Morgan Formby kept West Georgia in the game until Georgia State clinched the set, 25-19.
The third set began similarly to the first as UWG marched out to a 4-0 lead before GSU flipped the script and stole all of the momentum. The Panthers used a 9-1 run to take a 9-5 lead, putting the Wolves in danger of the receiving end of a sweep. Back-to-back kills from Formby halted Georgia State's momentum for a moment before the Panther's Alessia Cappai carried a mini 4-1 run, increasing the Wolves' deficit to five. West Georgia stayed within five for the next couple of rallies before GSU ran away with the set, winning 25-15.
West Georgia will be back in action on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. when they host the Alabama A&M Bulldogs in UWG's Military and First Responders Appreciation Day.
