UWG Edged Out at Home

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The UWG men's basketball team dropped its home conference contest to Jacksonville University this Thursday, falling 79-62 to the Dolphins in The Coliseum.

West Georgia (3-17, 1-6 ASUN) hung with Jacksonville (12-7, 6-1 ASUN) to start the game, but the Dolphins offensive firepower was just too much for the Wolves to keep pace. Jacksonville's 42 percent shooting from beyond the arc compared to UWG's 17 percent was a game-changer tonight.

UWG wrapped up the home contest with three players scoring double digits. Tamaury Releford led the way, posting a career-high of 18. Behind Releford, Shelton Williams-Dryden drained 14 points and for the third straight game, Kyric Davis broke into double digits, knocking down 13.

Zach Bell and Robert McCray V tied for a JU-high 19 points, followed by Stephon Payne III tallying 14 respectfully.

"Jacksonville is a really good team. They are a top-four team in our league. They are going to be competing for a championship, and are a potential NCAA Tournament team out of our league," said head coach Dave Moore. "They got all of the pieces. Size, athleticism, experience, toughness, they can defend and rebound, they can score the ball, and they got a guy in McCray (Robert McCray V) that is a first team all-league level player. They also got a bunch of guys that are really good players. You saw that with Zach Bell tonight. You got a guy who was shooting 20 percent from three, but tonight he hit 5-of-7. That really took them to the next level offensively."

Following a 19-day hiatus from The Coliseum, UWG opened on its home hardwood, battling the visitors from Florida.

The Wolves trailed 20-17 at the second media timeout, but were keeping on the Dolphins' tails. At this point, UWG was attacking the basket with even distribution, as Rickey Ballard and Tamaury Releford each had five points, in addition to four other Wolves scoring.

Heading into the halftime break, UWG trailed 45-34 with Kyric Davis leading the charge with 10 points while shooting 57 percent from the field. Both teams shot over 50 percent from field goal in the opening period, but JU's 54 three-point shooting percentage compared to West Georgia's 33 made the difference.

West Georgia's continued cold shooting from beyond the arc in the second half allowed the visitors to pull away, extending their lead to 59-43 with 12 minutes to play.

JU never looked back, going on to secure a 79-62 win over the Wolves, as UWG could never find their stroke from long range.

UWG finished the night hitting 46 percent from the field and just 17 percent from three. JU shot an even 44 percent from field goal and 42 percent from distance. Jacksonville also won the points off of turnover battle, 20-6.

As mentioned, Tamaury Releford led the way for UWG with a career-high of 18 while shooting a superb 90 percent from the field in addition to grabbing nine rebounds. Releford not only broke his career-high scoring record but also demonstrated a new level of physicality in the paint, adding another dimension to the UWG offense.

Following the game, head coach Dave Moore said, "I thought our defense was better in the second half, holding them to 40 percent from the field, 27 from three. They only hit three threes in the second, but we didn't have an answer. We go 1-from-12 in the second from three, and that's not going to do it against a really good team. We had some good looks and some good opportunities. I thought we executed really well at times. That's why they switched to the zone. At the end of the day, they scored 20 points off of our turnovers, they hit ten threes, and we go 3-for-18, and that's really the game."

The Wolves return to The Coliseum this Saturday to face off against the University of North Florida at 2 p.m.
