JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Back on the road for the first time since early January, the UWG women's basketball team fell 87-74 to the Jacksonville Dolphins in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Sydne Tolbert tied a career-high with 21 points for West Georgia (7-11, 1-6 ASUN), while Jacksonville (9-10, 3-4 ASUN) got 26 from the ASUN's leading scorer, Edyn Battle.
UWG also got double-figures from Zuriyah Davis with 13 and K'Nari Holliday with 10.
The Wolves and Dolphins traded baskets early in the game with neither team getting much of an advantage in the opening quarter. A Mykah Anderson layup five minutes into the contest gave the Wolves their first lead of the game, and UWG then went up by three on a Tolbert trey, but Jacksonville ended the first period on a 7-0 run and led by four.
In the second, it was even closer with JU edging the Wolves 19-18 in the period to extend the lead to five by halftime. Jacksonville took advantage of an aggressive defense, drawing fouls to send themselves to the line eight times in the second and converted all eight of them.
The Dolphins used that momentum to spring themselves to a 30-point quarter, shooting 8-for-11 from the field in the period. UWG shot a respectable 6-for-12 from the field in the third quarter, but found themselves trailing 69-56 heading into the final quarter.
Both teams scored 18 points in the final quarter, with Jacksonville's largest lead coming with just under three minutes to play.
Freshman Destiny Jones led the Wolves on the glass with seven rebounds while Tolbert had six.
West Georgia is back on the road on Saturday, taking on North Florida at 2 p.m.
