Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Danny Talbert

West Georgia Goes to the Wire in Road Loss

CONWAY, Ark.-  The University of West Georgia men's basketball team traded blows with the Central Arkansas Bears on the road, but ultimately UCA did just enough to stave off the Wolves' late push, securing the hosts a 75-70 conference victory.

UWG (4-18, 2-7 ASUN) battled back from being down by double digits multiple times tonight, however, the Bears (6-16, 2-7 ASUN) 44-32 first half lead combined with consistent shooting propelled the hosts past the Wolves.

UCA finished shooting 48 percent from the field and 44 percent from three, whereas UWG hit 40 percent from the field and 33 percent from three.

Kyric Davis led the way for the Wolves with 19 points, followed by Shelton Williams-Dryden with 15 and Malcolm Noel with 10. Tamaury Releford came in one-point shy of a double-double, finishing with nine points in addition to grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds.

Ben Fox led the Bears with 18 points, followed by Cole McCormick with 11 and Michael Evbagharu with eight.

Following the game, head coach Dave Moore stated, "It was a tale of two halves. Give Central Arkansas credit, they were ready to go. Really well coached and were prepared. They do a lot of different things. They play zone and different presses, but I thought we handled that pretty well. We gave them way too many easy baskets in the first half. They shot almost 52 percent from the field, they hit six threes and they scored 44 points. That's a number we can't give up to a team in a half. I was proud of the guys in the second half. We won the second by seven. It's hard to fight back on the road. To their credit, they hit shots in the second half. At least two threes down the stretch in crunch time. They made plays and we didn't. Give Central Arkansas their credit."

Kolten Griffin carried his momentum from last game's career-high performance into tonight, scoring five of the opening nine UWG points.

It was not just Griffin with the hot start, both teams opened the game shooting over 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from three, giving the hosts a 14-12 lead with 14:47 to go in the first half.

Over the next six minutes, West Georgia's offense sputtered, while the hosts continued to capitalize on offense, pushing their lead to 32-20.

The Wolves finished the half down 44-32 as the Bears sustained an exceptional 52 percent field goal rate and 46 percent three-point percentage. UWG closed out the period shooting an even 39 percent from field goal and 38 percent from three. Griffin, Noel and Williams-Dryden each posted a team-high seven opening period points.

West Georgia started the second half outscoring the hosts 12-4, thanks to an 8-0 run highlighted by threes from Noel and Brady Hardewig. This cut the UCA advantage to 48-44 with 14:25 left.

Similarly to the first period, each time the Wolves had its prey within striking distance, the Bears responded with quick attacks to reestablish a big lead. UCA held a 63-52 advantage with 12 minutes remaining.

Despite going down big again, UWG continued to fight. Over the following 10 minutes, West Georgia dashed the Bears lead to just 70-68 with Davis and Williams-Dryden pushing the pace.

Sadly, the Bears answered this final run by hitting its shots at the line, holding on to win 75-70.

As mentioned, Davis posted a team-high 19 points, shooting 56 percent from the field. This performance marked the fifth straight game that the junior guard broke into double digit scoring. Over this period, Davis has averaged 17.6 points per game.

Williams-Dryden has achieved this double digit feat in the last three games and Noel has done it in the last two.

The Wolves stay close out their two-game road stretch this Saturday in Charlotte, facing off against Queens at 1 p.m.
