CARROLLTON, Ga. - Taking on one of the hottest teams in the Atlantic Sun, the UWG women's basketball team came up just short, falling 67-64 to the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears on Thursday night in The Coliseum.
In a tight game that featured 12 lead changes and nine ties, West Georgia (8-12, 2-9 ASUN) had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but the attempt fell short as Central Arkansas (14-6, 8-1 ASUN) won their seventh straight contest.
All nine players who played for UWG scored at least one field goal, with three finishing in double-figures. Freshman Destiny Jones had 12 points and 12 rebounds to record her fifth double-double of the season. Mykah Anderson also finished with 12 points while Zuriyah Davis finished with 11, all in the second half.
The opening half alone had four lead changes and four ties. West Georgia spread their 29 first half points across eight players.
Becca Ledford hit a three-pointer to end the first quarter tied 13-13, and then UCA created a little separation in the second period. Central Arknsas opened the second on an 11-4 run to take a seven-point lead midway through the period.
A well-used timeout by head coach Joanna Reitz sparked some life back into the UWG offense who got their deficit to two three times down the stretch of the half. Sydne Tolbert hit what looked to be a buzzer-beater to send the game to the break with UCA leading by four, but instant replay ruled that the shot was not off in time, and UWG trailed 35-29 at halftime.
Zuriyah Davis made it nine different Wolves to score as she scored the first five points of the third, fueling UWG to a 7-0 run to start the period. By the end of the 10 minutes, there had been six more lead changes, and UCA clung to a 49-48 lead.
Central Arkansas hit an early bucket in the final quarter to start the scoring, and UWG clawed back to take a fourth-quarter lead at the 6:44 mark on a Jones layup.
The Sugar Bears, who had an advantage at the free throw line, retook the lead for good a little over a minute later, connecting on two foul shots. The lead got up to seven with just over two minutes left, but the Wolves had one more run in them. Down five with 20 seconds left, Zuriyah Davis hit a three-pointer to cut it to a two-point game, and then Grace O'Gara answered a pair of UCA free throws with a layup with seven seconds to keep hope alive.
UCA then missed the back end of their final free throws, and UWG had a chance to tie on their final possession, but the attempt was blocked by the ASUN's leader in blocked shots Bree Stephens.
The Wolves were 10-for-11 from the foul line while UCA finished 17-for-20. UWG did have the advantage in rebounding by a three-board margin (39-36).
West Georgia is back on the road on Saturday, renewing an old Gulf South Conference rivalry against the North Alabama Lions. Tip-time from Florence, Alabama is set for 6:30 p.m.
