FORT MYERS, Fla. - The UWG women's basketball team dropped a Saturday road contest at Florida Gulf Coast, falling 63-49 to the Eagles at Alico Arena in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
West Georgia (6-7, 0-2 ASUN) outshot Florida Gulf Coast (11-3, 2-0 ASUN) from the field, but the Wolves had 23 turnovers against the ASUN's top scoring defense. Despite shooting 41 percent on the night, UWG was held to their lowest scoring total of the season against the Eagles who won their 35th consecutive ASUN game.
Leading the Wolves offensively for a third straight game was Zuriyah Davis who scored 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, giving her three straight games of at least 15 points.
The Wolves held their own in the first half, shooting 55 percent from the field on the road. After trailing by six after a quarter, UWG got down by double-digits in the second quarter before getting it back to three.
UWG got it to three on a quick 6-0 run with a basket by Zuriyah Davis and back-to-back field goals by Mykah Anderson at the 4:46 mark of the second quarter.
That would be the last bucket of the half for the Wolves as the Eagles scored the final six points of the half including one of their four first half three pointers to take a nine-point advantage into the locker room.
FGCU's lead grew to as much as 18 in the third quarter, but UWG was able to cut it to as few as eight in the fourth quarter on a K'Nari Holliday layup that capped an 11-3 run for the Wolves.
UWG's defense tightened up at the perimeter in the second half, limiting the Eagles to just one three pointer after halftime. There was a noticeable difference at the foul line in the game as FGCU went to the line 23 times, converting 14 free throws while UWG made five of their six attempts at the charity stripe.
On the glass, UWG was led by the freshman-senior duo of Destiny Jones and Mykah Anderson, while Holliday grabbed seven.
Behind Davis' 18, the Wolves got eight points each from Anderson and Sydne Tolbert.
West Georgia will now return home and prepare for their first ever ASUN game at The Coliseum. The Wolves host Eastern Kentucky, who was picked fourth in the ASUN Preseason Poll, and enters with an 11-4 overall record after a loss at Lipscomb on Saturday.
