UWG Men’s Basketball Secures ASUN/SoCON Challenge Win

CARROLLTON, Ga- The UWG men's basketball secured its second straight home victory tonight (Nov. 14), beating The Citadel 100-92 in The Coliseum in the ASUN/SoCON Challenge.

With five different Wolves scoring double-digits, highlighted by multiple career-highs, UWG (2-2, 0-0 ASUN) broke the 100-point mark for the second time this year on its way to grabbing a victory over The Citadel (1-3, 0-0 SoCON).

Guard Josh Smith led the way for UWG with a career-high 27 points while shooting 60 percent (9-15) from the field, 75 percent from three (3-4) and 86 percent (6-7) from the line. Keynan Davis posted a Bulldogs-best 17 points. All of the West Georgia career-highs are listed at the bottom of the page.

"I thought there was good and bad. I thought we gave up way too many points in the second half. We gave up 53 points. We got to lot to work on. We are very much a work in progress," said head coach Dave Moore to open tonight's post game press conference. "But we were good enough to get up 19 points with five minutes and 30 seconds to go. We need to close the door there, and end the game. That's the disappointing piece." The full press conference can be viewed below.

Tonight's home game opened with both teams knocking down their shots. By the first media timeout, UWG led 9-8 with each squad hitting at a 50 percent field goal clip while going 100 percent from deep.

Over the next five minutes, both teams traded blows, but neither could create more than a couple of points of separation.

With UWG continuing to hit from deep, the Wolves created a 26-22 lead with under eight minutes remaining. At this point, wing Kolten Griffin's six points pushed the Pace for West Georgia.

Out of the under-eight media timeout, Smith knocked down a three, followed by a jumper from forward Shelton Williams-Dryden, forcing the visitors to call a break in the action down 31-24.

The half finished with West Georgia still holding a seven-point advantage, up 47-39. At the break, UWG was led by Williams-Dryden with 13 points.

Within the first minute of the second period, The Citadel knocked down five straight points to cut the Wolves' lead to 47-44.

Before the Bulldogs could overtake, West Georgia was able to create a 61-50 cushion with guard Chas Lewless draining eight points in the opening five minutes of the period.

With the Pack continuing to knock down its shots at well over 50 percent, UWG stayed out in front by double-digits. With under 12 minutes remaining, West Georgia led 67-57.

Even with The Citadel also hovering around a 50 percent second-half shooting, the Wolves' offense continued to pull away from the Bulldogs. From the under-12 timeout to the five minute mark, UWG went on a 19-10 run to extend its advantage to 86-67.

Despite the visitors clawing back to cut their deficit to 92-84, West Georgia held on to win 100-92 thanks to the Pack hitting their late foul shots.

The Wolves' next matchup brings the Pack to Tennessee to face off against the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech next Monday (Nov. 13) at 7 p.m. Be on the lookout for a preview and game notes coming out soon.
