Wolves Drop Season Opener to Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. - West Georgia men's basketball opened the 2025-26 season falling 86-53 to Nebraska tonight in the Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Holding a tight lead for over 13 minutes of the opening half, the Wolves' (0-1) smothering defense gave Nebraska (1-0) plenty of trouble to start, but the Cornhuskers' mid-game 16-point run combined with 63 percent in the second half shooting, secured the hosts their first victory ever over UWG.

Forward Shelton Williams-Dryden led the Wolves with 14 points while shooting 5-19 (26 percent) from the field and 4-4 (100 percent) from the line. Guard Chas Lewless posted a career-high 11 points, shooting 4-15 (26 percent) from the field and 3-11 (27 percent) from three. Forward Kenneth Chime recorded a team-high seven rebounds and three blocks while totaling seven points on 3-5 (60 percent) shooting from the field and 1-2 (50 percent) from the line in his first collegiate game. Guard Brady Hardewig led UWG with a career-high three steals.

"We had some time to work at it. We worked on their stuff. We had a plan defensively. I thought we executed that plan in the first half," stated head coach Dave Moore about tonight's game plan and performance. "I was disappointed with the effort in the second half. I thought at times we let it get away from us in terms of our effort, and Nebraska does a great job. They get out in transition, they really go and when they start making baskets, that fuels them even more in transition. We didn't respond to that well. We didn't have enough urgency in transition."

Following a slow start for both squads, the first West Georgia bucket of the season came on a steal-turned-score by Williams-Dryden.

With Lewless knocking down his first three of the year, UWG led 9-4 over the Cornhuskers at the 14-minute mark.

Using a physical and smothering defense, highlighted by Chime's three blocks and the team recording four steals, West Georgia continued to hold a tight 15-11 lead over Nebraska at the under-eight media timeout.

The Wolves continued to stay out in front until a pair of free throws at the three-minute mark gave the hosts a 24-23 lead, their first since leading 2-0.

With the UWG offense stalling out for the final minutes, Nebraska would go on a 6-0 run to finish with a 30-25 advantage at the break. The Wolves led for 13:28 of the first half with Williams-Dryden and Chime both posting a team-high six points.

Carrying over the first half drought into the second, Nebraska's lead continued to balloon. The hosts' scoring run was pushed to 16 points before West Georgia knocked down a free throw to stop the bleeding, down 40-26.

With Nebraska shooting 5-10 (50 percent) from three in the second half, the Cornhuskers extended their advantage to 48-27 by the 14-minute mark.

Nebraska continued to hit their shots the rest of the way, finishing with a 63 percent second half field goal percentage. The Wolves' could not keep pace while recording a 29 percent second half field goal percentage.

UWG would fall, 86-53, after being outscored 56-28 in the second half.

The Wolves return to The City of Dreams to host Huntingdon College this upcoming Friday at 7 p.m. in the Packs' home opener. Tickets for the game can be purchased here.
