LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A strong second half and 63 combined points from Kyric Davis, Shelton Williams-Dryden, and Kolten Griffin powered the UWG men's basketball team to an 81-76, road victory over Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon.
Davis led all scorers with 26 while Williams-Dryden poured in 21 for West Georgia (5-22, 3-11 ASUN), snapping a five-game skid while Bellarmine (3-24, 0-14 ASUN) dropped their 16th consecutive decision. Griffin, who finished with a respectable 16 points was nearly overshadowed by the onslaught of points from Davis and Williams-Dryden.
West Georgia outscored their opposition 47-34 in the second half, erasing a halftime deficit and leading for the final 15:30 of game time.
Despite having the advantage in field goal percentage in the opening half, UWG found themselves trailing after 20 minutes. West Georgia's first lead came at the 15:31 mark on a Davis layup, and after Bellarmine responded to go up by as much as seven, the Wolves regained the lead at the 7:17 mark on a triple from Davis.
The triples were the difference in the first half as UWG hit four three-pointers while Bellarmine knocked in eight.
Davis ended the first half with 12 points, but Bellarmine led by eight at the break, 42-34.
The script from distance would flip in the second half as UWG hit six three-pointers to just four from the Knights, who finished the night 12-of-30 from beyond the arc. Malcolm Noel, Davis, and Kolten Griffin each hit three-pointers early in the second half to chip into the deficit.
A Rickey Ballard three-pointer at the 15:31 point, gave the Wolves a 48-46 lead, and the Wolves would never relinquish that, although the Knights kept the game in a single-digit margin until another three from Griffin at the 6:22 mark.
West Georgia's lead got to as much as 12 down the stretch, and Bellarmine hit a late three to get it to five with 20 seconds left, but Davis converted both free throws at the line, drowning out any chance of a Bellarmine comeback.
The second-half rebounding was key for the Wolves as UWG was out-rebounded 19-13 in the first half before grabbing 21 rebounds to BU's 10 in the second half. Williams-Dryden led UWG's efforts on the glass with 10 rebounds to notch his fifth double-double of the season.
West Georgia remains on the road in their next ASUN action, traveling to North Alabama on Tuesday, February 18 for a 7 p.m. game against North Alabama in Florence.
