Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Danny Talbert

West Georgia Bested by the Bears in Carrollton

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia men's basketball team fell 82-71 to the Central Arkansas Bears tonight at The Coliseum.

A decisive 7-3 advantage in second-half three-pointers propelled the visiting UCA Bears (8-21, 4-12 ASUN) to their first road victory of the season, defeating the UWG Wolves (5-24, 3-13 ASUN) in Carrollton.

Tamuary Releford led the Wolves tonight with a career-high of 20 points. Behind Relefod, Shelton Williams-Dryden knocked down 13 and Kyric Davis and Rickey Ballard scored 11.

The Bears finished with four players in double scoring figures. Brayden Fagbemi led the Bears with 19 points. Following Fagbemi, Cole McCormick scored 18, Nehemiah Turner scored 17 and Elias Cato scored 16.

Following the game, head coach Dave Moore stated, "Hats off to their starters, those guys made plays. Brayden Fagemi made shots when they needed them. Cole McCormick made shots when they needed them. Elias Cato made his shots when they needed them. They hit 12 threes to our eight. That's a 12-point difference right there, and we lost by 11. Everything else was pretty even. To their credit, they made shots when they needed them. It kept us from getting back into the game. They kept us at arm's length with their shot making in the second half. All the credit to them."

Both teams opened tonight struggling to hit their shots. Six minutes into the game, UCA led 10-7 with the visitors shooting 30 percent from the field and the Wolves shooting slightly better at 36 percent.

Following this slow start, both teams began to settle in. By the under-eight media timeout, the two squads were hovering around 50 field goal percentage with the visitors leading 19-14.

Kyric Davis' eight points fueled a surge by UWG, erasing UCA's lead and putting the Wolves ahead 29-28.

Like a quarterback sitting back in the pocket searching for an open wide receiver, UWG players began sitting at the top of the arc looking to feed a variety of Wolves under the basket. Using this tactic to success, West Georgia and UCA traded leads back and forth the rest of the half.

At the break, UWG trailed 36-35. The Wolves were led by Tamaury Releford with ten points and the Bears were led by Brayden Fagemi.

An 11-7 scoring burst to begin the second half, largely due to Nehemiah Turner's effectiveness down low, pushed the Bears ahead 47-42. At this point, the 6-foot-10 center drained 10 points in the paint through 25 minutes of play.

Over the next nine minutes, the Wolves found themselves down 62-49 with the Bears' six second half threes being the difference.

UWG continued to scrap with Central Arkansas, but the late double-digit score difference proved to be too much.

West Georgia fell 82-71

For the first time in his career, Tamaury Releford secured a 20-plus point performance. The big man achieved this feat shooting 80 percent from the field and making all four of his free throws. This career-high game marked the second straight contest Releford broke into double-digits.

Looking at the team stats, both squads looked even throughout the box score. As previously noted, the visitors held a slight edge in three-point shooting, converting 12 attempts compared to the Wolves' eight. One area that the Wolves dominated was in bench points, outscoring the Bears 34-4.

UWG returns to The Coliseum to rematch the Royals of Queens next Monday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
