Wolves Secure Second Series Win

CARROLLTON, Ga. -  West Georgia baseball beat the Bobcats of Ohio 4-3 today at Cole Field, securing the Wolves their second series win of the year.

After trailing in today's game for the opening six innings, Carter Dierdorf propelled UWG (4-2) ahead of the Ohio Bobcats (1-5) with a two-run homer in the seventh. Other than a high-scoring second inning by the Bobcats, the Wolves dominated the plate, out-hitting Ohio 8-4.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith said, "This team doesn't panic. When Ohio scored those three runs in the second, the guys stayed focused on the job at hand. I think they did an excellent job staying calm. The team fought back today and I'm proud of them for that.

Starting on the mound for West Georgia was senior right-handed pitcher Seth Dudley. Prior to the Ohio series, Dudley posted a 15.75 ERA after UNO scored seven runs off of eight hits in his four innings of work last week. Ohio started with senior left-handed pitcher Dillon Masters. In his four innings on the mound this season, Masters has struck out five batters, walked four and let up three hits, but has not been scored on.

Similarly to yesterday, the Bobcats were the first team to get on the scoreboard. During the top of the second, sophomore outfielder Ben Slanker crushed a two-run homer to put the Bobcats up by a pair of runs. The visitors ended the top of the frame holding a 3-0 lead after a Bobcat cracked a sacrifice fly to left.

During the fourth, UWG dashed the visitors' advantage to 3-1 on an RBI single by senior infielder Patrick McCullough

In the following inning, junior right fielder Landon Weidner squeaked a hard-hit ball past the Ohio third baseman, allowing a UWG player to score.

The sixth inning marked the ending of Seth Dudley's day on the mound. In his five frames of work, Dudley let up three runs off of four hits, while striking out five batters. This brings his season strikeout total to 11. Taking over the pitching duties for UWG was junior right-handed pitcher Gavin Mask.

In the seventh frame, Carter Dierdorf jacked a two-run homer that cut just inside the foul pole, pushing the Wolves to their first lead against Ohio since the series opener.

Heading into the eighth, Gavin Mask was replaced on the mound by right-handed graduate student Dosie Drakeford. In his two innings of work, Mask struck out three of the eight batters he faced while not giving up a hit or run.

Thanks to excellent pitching by Drakeford, the Wolves held on to win 4-3.

BY THE NUMBERS
Through two innings on the mound, Dosie Drakeford struck out two of the six batters he faced while not giving up a run or hit. Today's performance earned him his first save of the season.

With his third home run of the season coming today, Carter Dierdorf now shares the top spot in the ASUN for this statistic.

The series between UWG and Ohio was marked by a high strikeout count, with both teams registering 27 punchouts total.

The Wolves finished the series out-hitting the Bobcats 25-15.
