UWG Baseball Grabs Game One Win

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Explosive fourth and fifth innings propelled the Wolves to a 9-3 win over Eastern Kentucky in game one at Cole Field. The teams close out the series with a Saturday doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Solid pitching by Seth Dudley and a Hank Smith RBI single in the fourth inning that ignited a 9-0 scoring swing for the Wolves (5-3) against EKU (0-9), proved to be the deciding factors in tonight's home game. The Wolves finished the day winning the hitting battle again, 10-8.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith stated, "Seth Dudley went out there and gave us a quality start. He did exactly what he is capable of doing. Offensively, we hung in there and were patient. Their pitcher was throwing it extremely well. We were able to get a few back-to-back hits and were able to scrap a few runs. The guys competed. They compete in the box. Quality starts and toughness in the box is what we need to have.'

Starting on the mound for UWG in game one was senior righty Seth Dudley. In nine innings through a pair of appearances, Dudley has let up 10 runs off of 12 hits while striking out 11 batters. Starting for EKU was senior right-handed pitcher Ryker Walton. Currently posting a 0-2 record, Walton has posted a 2.08 ERA after letting up three runs off of six hits in his 8.2 innings of work.

Today's game one at Cole Field opened up as a pitching battle. Through the first three scoreless frames, Dudley and Walton struck out four batters each while giving up a total of three hits.

All stayed quiet until the UWG bats came alive in the fourth. Redshirt sophomore catcher Hank Smith kicked things off by lasering an RBI single into right field. Following this, junior shortstop Jacob Bowman drove another UWG player home on a ground out. The Wolves ended the inning up 3-0 after Prince reached home on a throwing error by shortstop.

Carrying their momentum into the next frame, junior right fielder Landon Weidner jump-started the EKU inning rout with a solo home run that cleared the left field wall. After that, back-to-back wild pitches allowed a pair of Wolves to score, bringing the UWG lead to 6-0. Senior center fielder Cooper Prince and sophomore designated hitter Noah Darden then pushed the Wolves' advantage to 8-0 on consecutive RBI singles. UWG ended the inning up 9-0 after a throwing error allowed Prince to score.

The seventh inning marked the ending of Dudley's day. Through six scoreless frames, Dudley let up four hits and struck out six batters. He was replaced by junior righty Camden Diamond

During the following inning, EKU dashed the UWG lead to 9-3 after cracking three quick scores.

Going into the ninth, Diamond was replaced by right-handed junior Garrett Moody. Diamond finished the day allowing three runs off of three hits. He also struck out two batters.

Moody helped the Wolves escape tonight with a 9-3 win over EKU. In his one scoreless frame, Moody struck out two and walked one, but did not give up a hit.

BY THE NUMBERS
For the fifth time this season, UWG won the hitting battle, 10-8.

Leading the charge with three hits in four at-bats was senior second baseman Patrick McCullough. Designated hitter AJ Groeneveld posted an EKU-high three hits in four at-bats.

As noted, Landon Weidner jacked his second home run of the season today, bringing the Wolves' count to eight on the season. This means that UWG is currently averaging one home run per game.
