CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Despite a sluggish first half, the West Georgia Women's Basketball team pulled out a gutsy win, 56-49 against conference foe Queens on Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In a game that had a significant impact on ASUN Conference seeding, West Georgia's (9-14, 3-9 ASUN) second-half efforts helped the Wolves defeat the Queens Royals (8-15, 2-9 ASUN) and snapped a three-game losing streak.
Limiting the Wolves' second quarter scoring to under ten points and causing 14 turnovers, the Royals would have West Georgia's number early in the matchup leading at the half, 30-24.
UWG was able to regain their composure and settle into a rhythm after halftime, and they would never look back. Outscoring Queens 32-19 in the second half, West Georgia's defensive prowess would change the trajectory of the game and open up a gateway for their offense to shine.
Three players for UWG would score in double digits, with Destiny Jones, the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Week, leading the pack with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Mykah Anderson finished with three steals and 11 points, while Sydne Tolbert finished with three assists and 10 points.
The Royals were held to 3-of-14 field goals and 1-of-4 three-pointers by West Georgia in the third quarter. The Wolves were able to knot the score at 39-39 entering the fourth quarter as a result.
The Wolves offense was able to gain momentum in the final quarter since Queens failed to make a field goal and went 0-of-12 from the field. That allowed the Wolves offense to pick up steam, going on a 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter, led by Becca Ledford, who came off the bench and scored nine points, including two important threes, to give West Georgia their first lead of the game at 41-40 with 8:32 left.
After trailing the whole game, UWG's lead increased to seven points in the fourth quarter. Which would silence any last chance efforts the Royals put forward.
With this win, the Wolves' five-day road trip comes to a close and a three-game losing streak is ended.
The Wolves will return home to kickoff a three game home stand Wednesday, February 12th at 7:00 p.m. against Austin Peay.
