Wolves Drop Saturday Doubleheader

CARROLLTON, Ga. - UWG baseball fell 11-2 and 11-6 to Stetson in today's doubleheader, resulting in the Hatters taking the series 3-0.

Game one stayed locked up through the opening few frames, but an explosive later half, highlighted by six Hatter scores in the sixth, pushed Stetson (17-12, 7-2 ASUN) past the Wolves (13-13, 4-5 ASUN). Similarly to today's opening contest, game two stayed neck-and-neck until eight SU runs in the eighth secured the Hatters the series sweep.

After the games, head coach Jeff Smith briefly talked about what he saw today, stating, "We gave up six runs in the sixth in game one and eight runs in the eighth in game two, we got to be better than that. When guys come into relief, they need to minimize those mistakes. Good teams are going to take every mistake you give them and maximize it. Stetson was able to do it in those two innings today."

GAME ONE
Starting for the Wolves in game one was junior righty Sam Cole. Coming into today, Cole posted a sixth-best in-conference 2.88 ERA with 23 strikeouts through 34.1 innings across six starts. SU pitched junior lefty Jonthanth Gonzalez. In 34.1 innings across six games, Gonzalez posted a fourth-best in-conference 2.48 ERA, a third-best 36 strikeouts and held batters to a third-lowest .194 average.

The visitors started today's opener jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first after a UWG baulk brought a Hatter home. With a Hatter covering each bag, it looked like Stetson was going to strike again, but a Cole punchout got the Wolves out of the jam down just 1-0.

During the second, Mason Cooper locked the game at 1-1 on a base hit RBI through the left side.

The game stayed tied at one apiece until Walt McConnell put the Wolves up 2-1 with a single to center field during the fourth, marking his first hit of the season.

In the sixth, Stetson captured a 3-2 lead after back-to-back Hatters were hit by pitch with the bases loaded. Following this, Cole was relieved by right-handed junior Camden Diamond with the bases still loaded. SU finished the top of the frame up 7-2. Through 5.1 innings, Cole struck out three batters and allowed six earned runs.

During the following frame, Stetson pushed the lead to 8-2 with an RBI base hit to left field.

Diamond would be replaced in the eighth by sophomore righty Davis Williams. In 1.2 innings, Diamond struck out one Hatter and allowed two earned runs. SU extended the lead to 11-2 during this inning.

Williams struck out one batter and allowed three runs in his lone frame. Freshman righty Maverick Torres closed out the game for the Wolves on the mound. In Torres' ninth inning appearance, the pitcher struck out one batter and did not give up a hit.

UWG went on to fall 11-2 while being out-hit 15-10. Jack Witmer led the West Georgia batting charge with three hits. Sam Cole was tagged with the loss, bringing his season record to 2-3.

GAME TWO
Senior righty Seth Dudley made his seventh start on the mound for UWG in today's series finale. Coming into the game, Dudley posted a 4.13 ERA and ranked ninth in the ASUN with 33 strikeouts through 32.2 innings across six starts. Stetson pitched junior righty Mason Davenport. In 22.1 innings through six games, Davenport posted a 5.64 ERA with 21 strikeouts prior to today.

Following two scoreless frames, Brady McDevitt put the Wolves up 3-0 on a no-doubt homer over the right field fence in the third.

UWG held their biggest lead of the series until a three-run Stetson homer during the fifth knotted the game at three apiece.

Dudley pitched through seven frames before being relieved by junior righty Bryan Gomez. Through seven, Dudley struck out five batters and allowed three runs.

During the eighth, SU jumped out to a 5-3 lead off of a two-run base hit into left field. Following this, the Hatters pushed their advantage to 7-3 with a two-score double down the left field line. This ended Gomez' day on the mound, being replaced by junior righty Ian Moore. SU finished the top of the frame holding an 11-3 lead with six earned runs being tagged to Gomez.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jacob Bowman dashed the Hatters' advantage to 11-6 with the Wolves' second homer of the game.

Moore rotated off of the mound for junior righty Gavin Mask to start the ninth. In Moore's .2 innings, he struck out one batter and allowed two runs. In the ninth, Mask struck out all three Hatters.

UWG would fall 11-6.

Bryan Gomez was tagged with the loss, bringing his season record to 0-2. The Wolves were led at the plate by Jacob Bowman, Beau Brand and Brady McDevitt with two hits, but were out-hit as a team 11-10.
