Strong First Half Effort Not Enough as Wolves Fall to Panthers

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wolves battled a high-powered Georgia State offense on Thursday night but ultimately fell 3-0 at the GSU Soccer Complex. The loss moves UWG to 0-3-0 on the year, while the Panthers improve to 2-1-0.

A lightning delay pushed kickoff back to 8:30 p.m., but UWG came out ready, highlighted by freshman goalkeeper Emily Sanabria's first career start. Sanabria was sharp early, recording seven first-half saves to keep the match scoreless despite the Panthers firing 14 shots in the opening half.

Georgia State began the game aggressively with three shots and two corner kicks in the first five minutes.
The Wolves quickly responded with chances of their own. Noemi Casique put a shot on target in the 7th minute, followed by Campbell Taylor in the 11th. Off the bench, Katherine Hagans made an immediate impact, adding a shot on goal in the 32nd minute. Despite a physical, back-and-forth first half with 19 combined shots, the score remained even at 0-0 heading into the break.

The second half saw Georgia State break through. Reese Gordon (51') and Elise Nystrom (55') struck back-to-back goals before Hina Suzuki (72') extended the Panthers' lead to 3-0. The Wolves nearly answered in the 68th minute when Bella Yelton and Aleyshka Orellano both came within inches of scoring after a blocked shot attempt.

Despite the defeat, Sanabria's performance stood out, finishing with a career-high 14 saves and showing promise in her first collegiate Sun Belt matchup.

UWG now turns its attention to Mercer, traveling to Macon, Ga. for a Sunday night showcase at 6 p.m. at Betts Stadium. Fans can follow the match via live stream and live stats, linked at the top of the page.
