Offense Shines in ASUN Victory Over Hatters

CARROLLTON, Ga.- UWG women's soccer made history Thursday night at University Soccer Field, earning their first win over Stetson in a 3-1 victory. The Wolves not only avenged last season's 1-0 loss to the Hatters, but also surpassed last year's win total while scoring the most goals in their Division I era.

The first goal came quickly as UWG converted their very first shot of the match in the 15th minute. Forward Kaylen Brown continues her streak, scoring three of the Wolves' last four goals. The goal also set a new team record for the earliest goal scored, topping the previous best of 35 minutes against Alabama A&M.

UWG doubled their lead just before halftime when freshman Bella Yelton came off the bench and delivered the first goal of her career in the 44th minute, sending the Wolves into the break ahead 2-0. Both of the opening goals came from freshmen, showcasing the program's young talent and exciting future.

Play resumed in the second half after a 40 minute lightning delay, but the momentum stayed with UWG. In the 60th minute, Aleyshka Orellano joined the list of scorers, scoring her first of the season to make the score 3-0. It marked the first time in the Wolves' Division I era that three different players found the net in the same match.

Stetson refused to go down without a fight, outshooting UWG 19-8 overall and generating 11 second half corner kicks. The Hatters found the back of the net in the 84th minute on a goal from Kelly Gende. However, goalkeeper Emily Sanabria anchored the Wolves' defense throughout the night. Sanabria finished with nine saves on 19 shots faced, keeping UWG comfortably in front despite Stetson's late surge.

After the match, head coach Mallory Sayre praised her team's performance, saying, "To score three goals in our first home conference match is great and something we look to continue on Sunday afternoon." Sayre also emphasized the importance of the result, adding, "Everybody wants to win, and we are proving that we are a competitive team that will look to be a threat in the ASUN conference."

The 3-1 result not only gave the Wolves their first ASUN victory of the season but also marked the most goals scored under head coach Mallory Sayre's tenure. UWG improved to 3-9-0 overall and 1-2-0 in ASUN play, while Stetson dropped to 3-8-0 and 0-2-0 in the conference. West Georgia's next match is set for Sunday, September 28 at 1 p.m. against Florida Gulf Coast University at University Soccer Field.
