Conference Opener Ends in Tight 3-1 Loss

CARROLLTON, Ga. - UWG volleyball opened conference play falling 3-1 to North Florida in its first home match of the season.

After losing the first two sets, the Wolves' (2-12, 0-1 ASUN) valiant effort and solid team play brought the home match within striking distance, but UNF (7-7, 1-0 ASUN) did just enough to hold off the Pack to secure their fourth win in the last five games.

UWG was led by Valiree Schmus with 15.5 points, tying her career-high in kills with 14. Addy Franz recorded a career-high 38 assists and Maggie Kachmarik finished with a season-high 11 digs

MATCH DETAILS
Tonight's opening set kicked off with the two teams trading blows through the first 15 points each squad scored. By the time this mark was hit, UNF began to creep away by capitalizing off UWG errors. Despite falling behind 23-18, an Ospreys' service error and a big-time block by Sanai Young and Rylee Henderson had the UWG faithful on their feet and the Wolves within three. Even with the Pack feeding off the great hometown energy, the Ospreys pulled out a 25-21 win. Remarkably, five of the UNF points in set one were off UWG service errors.

It was all North Florida in the second set. With the Ospreys jumping out to an early lead, the Wolves tried to slow the bleeding and regroup early by calling an early timeout. Similar to the first set, North Florida's advantage began to balloon once UWG broke into the low teens, as the Pack's offense continued to slow. UNF would go on to win 25-13, finishing with a 9-4 run.

Despite falling behind two sets, the Wolves were not ready to roll over. Through the first few volleys, the teams traded scores, but neither could create any early breathing room. That was until back-to-back kills by Henderson sparked an 11-3 run, giving UWG a 15-7 advantage. At this point, there was nothing the Ospreys could do to keep pace with the Pack, especially with UWG recording a clean .303 hitting percentage in the set. West Georgia took the third set, 25-18.

Opening the fourth set with three UWG attack errors, UNF held a 4-1 lead to start the finale off. Tallying points by a handful of different Wolves, the Pack was able to cut their deficit down to 10-9 with Schmus leading the way. UWG stayed on the Ospreys' tail until the Wolves were able to lock the match at 17-17 with a Franz service ace. From then on out, each time one squad scored, the other responded in kind. Benefiting from three straight UNF errors, the Pack created a 22-20 advantage, forcing the visitors to call a break in the action. Out of the timeout, UNF locked the game back up at 22-22 following a UWG service error and an Ospreys' kill. Tallying three points off a pair of Henderson kills and a UNF error, West Georgia held a 25-24 lead. Sadly, the Ospreys' strong finish resulted in the visitors taking the final set, 28-26.
