ECU Pirates Overpower Wolves in Carolina

ASHEVILLE, NC- West Georgia volleyball dropped the final match of the Bulldog Invitational, 3-0, to East Carolina today, wrapping up the weekend trip 0-3.

Led by Valiree Schmus for the fourth straight match with 12.5 points, UWG (0-6) looked much sharper on day two in North Carolina, but the undefeated ECU Pirates (6-0) proved to be too much for the Wolves to overcome, resulting in 25-22, 25-17 and 25-18 set losses.

MATCH DETAILS
The Bulldog Invitational's finale started with a very tight first set between the Wolves and Pirates. By the time East Carolina's lead reached 17-14, the match had already been tied seven times, with Schmus pushing the pace for UWG with five points, followed by Rylee Henderson with four. Continuing to fight, the Wolves battled back from down four to cut the deficit to 24-22 after some costly errors gave ECU free points. Sadly, ECU scored the 25th before the Wolves could claw back.

In the following set, the Pirates quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead, forcing UWG to call a timeout in the action. Capitalizing on some ECU errors, a block by Alex Strating and Mackenzie Yoakum, and kills by Henderson and Grace-Blythe Cornett, UWG cut the East Carolina lead to 11-8, but could not get any closer. The Pirates high-powered offense extended their advantage to 19-11, and despite a three-score run by the Wolves, this was just too much to overcome. ECU held on to win 25-17.

Similarly to the first set, neither team was able to create much distance on the scoreboard at the start of the third. By the time the match got locked up at 13-13, the game had been tied six times. Going on a 5-0 scoring run, ECU extended their advantage to 18-13, and did not look back. The undefeated Pirates held on to win 25-17.

Following Schmus' team-high 12.5 points off of 12 kills, Henderson recorded a season-high 10 points off of 10 kills. Schmus finished the weekend with 34 points. Yoakum recorded a career-high five points and four kills while tying her block-high of two against ECU.
