Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Danny Talbert

UCA Bears Overpower the Wolves in Carrollton

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Playing in their first home game in over two weeks, the West Georgia men's basketball team was overpowered by the red-hot Central Arkansas Bears, falling 86-65 tonight in Wolves' fourth straight loss.

Doing what they do best, the Bears' (10-10, 5-2 ASUN) multiple defenses forced UWG (9-10, 3-4 ASUN) to commit a season-high 22 turnovers, while they limited their mistakes to just eight, resulting in the visitors taking the double-digit win. Remarkably, 27 of Central Arkansas's 86 points were off turnovers.

The Wolves were led by forward Shelton Williams-Dryden with 19 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 64 percent (7-11) from the field. Tonight's double-double is his seventh this season and his fourth in ASUN play. UCA was led by Ty Robinson with 22 points on 75 percent (8-12) shooting.

"It was disappointing in the first half to get a couple shot clock violations with guys that aren't aware of the shot clock,"  said head coach Dave Moore after the loss. "You've got to get better ball player movement against the zone. They (UCA) play a lot of switching man-to-man, so they present a lot of different things in a game that you have to be ready for, and I thought we did a good job preparing this week, but we had some guys out there that were not ready to go." Continuing in the post-game press conference, coach Moore stated, "We had some guys out there that weren't very good tonight, and we had multiple guys, like I told the team, we had one, two, three, four guys with three turnovers, and several of those guys are veteran guys. You can't turn a ball over three times in a game, I don't care how many minutes you're playing, that's a really high number, and then when you have four guys do it, that just sabotages everything you're trying to do."

Despite the Wolves outshooting the Bears in the first half 67 percent from the field to the visitors' 58 percent, the Pack's 14 turnovers dictated the opening period.

After spending the last two weeks on the road, West Georgia opened today's game playing with high energy in front of the home crowd.

While this intensity helped the Pack on defense, the jitteriness also led to three early UWG turnovers. At the first media timeout, the Wolves lead 11-9 with five of the Bears' points coming off UWG mistakes.

Even with the Wolves' early turnover tally pushing to seven, the game was locked at 20 apiece by the under 12-minute media timeout thanks to the Pack shooting at 70 percent from the field, highlighted by three three-pointers. This excellent team shooting percentage was in part thanks to Williams-Dryden knocking down his opening six shots.

With West Georgia's offense stalling out for over four minutes, UCA jumped out to a 33-26 lead by the final media timeout, riding a 13-0 run.

Capitalizing on a handful of late turnovers, UCA pushed its lead to 43-34 by the break. Williams-Dryden's 15 points led the way for the Wolves in the opening period.

Central Arkansas opened the second half knocking down six of its opening eight shots (75 percent), while West Georgia started by going 1-for-5 (20 percent) from the field, resulting in the visitors' lead ballooning to 56-38 with 16 minutes remaining.

The Bears' offensive success came from under the basket. At this point in the game, 34 of their 56 points (61 percent) were scored from inside the paint, with the majority of those points coming from directly under the hoop.

Over the next four minutes, the Wolves and Bears traded scores with Malcolm Noel adding four to his total to cut the UCA lead to 66-50.

Even with Brady Hardewig hitting back-to-back three-pointers, the Bears responded in kind, ultimately totaling six three-pointers in the second half to finish the night with 12.

Fueled by 58 percent a field goal percentage and five double-digit scorers, the Bears went on to win 86-65.

The Wolves stay in The City of Dreams to host Queens University this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Links to live streaming and where to purchase tickets are tagged at the top of the page.
