UWG Battles Austin Peay in 3-1 Setback

CARROLLTON, Ga.- The University of West Georgia women's soccer team (0-8-2, 0-3 UAC) fell 3-1 to the Austin Peay Governors (2-9-1, 1-2 UAC) Sunday afternoon in the City of Dreams.

Austin Peay came out strong to begin the match, finding the back of the net in the seventh minute. After the Wolves mishandled a free kick, Carolyne Young capitalized on the opportunity to give the Governors an early 1-0 advantage. The goal marked Young's first of the season.

The Wolves continued to battle and eventually found an answer in the 24th minute when Noemi Casique headed a shot past the Austin Peay goalkeeper to level the match at 1-1. The goal marked Casique's second of the season and her first since scoring in the season opener against Jacksonville State. With the goal, Casique now leads UWG in goals this season.

Both teams continued to battle throughout the remainder of the opening half, with UWG holding a 5-3 advantage in shots. Each team recorded two shots on goal heading into the halftime break.

Ava Timberlake exited the match after battling an injury in the 59th minute. Just two minutes later, Austin Peay regained the lead when Paige Chrustowski found the back of the net in the 61st minute for her first goal of the season. The Wolves continued to search for an equalizer, with Rachel Higgins, Payton Ramsay and Adelyn O'Bryan each recording a shot on goal in the second half. Austin Peay goalkeeper Megan Waskiewicz turned away each attempt and finished the match with five saves.

Timberlake would once again exit the match in the 78th minute, and just seconds after she left the field, Austin Peay found the back of the net once again, with Sadie Yapp scoring in the 79th minute off an assist from Abby Matthews to give the Governors a 3-1 advantage. The goal marked Yapp's first of the season.

The Wolves continued to push offensively but were unable to find another goal as Austin Peay secured the 3-1 victory.

Despite the final score, the match remained competitive across the stat sheet. Austin Peay held a narrow 14-13 advantage in shots and an 8-6 edge in shots on goal, while both Emily Sanabria and Waskiewicz finished with five saves. UWG earned seven corner kicks compared to three for the Governors and controlled 55 percent of the possession.

The Wolves return to the City of Dreams on Thursday, Oct. 8, for another UAC matchup against Little Rock. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at University Soccer Field.
