First Road Matchup Results in 9-4 Loss

KENNESAW, Ga. - West Georgia baseball was handed a 9-4 loss tonight by the Kennesaw State Owls in the team's first road game of the year.

Jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first, it looked KSU (3-0) was going to stage a big home win, but UWG (1-4) did not let the Owls off that easily. Capitalizing on RBI singles courtesy of Gabe Wuerth and Blake Bradford, the Wolves dashed the hosts' advantage to 7-4 in the eighth. Unfortunately, the Pack could not get enough offense going in their last at-bat to overcome the ballooned 9-4 deficit, resulting in the team's first road loss of the season.

"We just can't continue to chase runs from the get-go. You know, the four spot that they got in the first, it takes you a little bit out of your offense of what you can do. You gotta swing to get back in the game," said head coach Jeff Smith. "You take away the four in the first, we're in a one-run, two-run ball game, and we would have had the lead at one point. So it's frustrating on that point. But I think we have the makings of being very solid if we eliminate a few mistakes."

The home crowd in the newly built Mickey Dunn Stadium at Henssler Financial Field didn't need to wait long for the Owls to get going today. Fueled by a pair of doubles and base hits, the hosts drove in four runners in the first inning to jump out to an early advantage.

Coming off a scoreless second, Mason Cooper rocketed his first homer of the year over the left field fence, cutting the hosts' advantage to 4-1.

In the bottom of the third, KSU responded with a single RBI to center field to reestablish a four-run lead. Still in the third, it looked like Kennesaw was going to bring more Owls home until UWG turned its first double play of the day to escape the inning still down four.

With an Owl on base and only one out in the fourth inning, KSU had another great opportunity to add to their total, but another UWG double play put that to bed before it could come to fruition.

During the fifth, KSU added two more runs from a pair of base hits to balloon their lead to 7-1.

After being held scoreless since Cooper's third-inning home run, Wuerth snapped the cold streak in the eighth with an RBI single to center. Still in the eighth frame, Bradford drove a pair of Wolves home to cut the hosts' advantage to 7-4.

During the bottom of the eighth, KSU added two runs on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch that brought an Owl home.

UWG would fall 9-4.

Gavin Mask earned tonight's loss, his first of the season. In his .2 frames, he allowed four earned runs.

The Wolves continue its 13-game road stretch taking on the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in a three-game series this weekend. First pitch from Gary Hogan Field is set for 4 p.m. on Friday.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
