BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - It took 11 innings, but the UWG softball team got a big road victory on Wednesday, defeating the UAB Blazers, 6-4, at Mary Bowers Field.
West Georgia (4-7) led 4-1 in the sixth before UAB (5-6) tied it up and forced extra innings, but in the end the Wolves got it done, winning their first true road game of the season.
West Georgia struck early in their first at-bat as Ella Oswalt doubled off the right-centerfield wall with two outs and then came home to score as Jenna Samuel doubled to left center.
In the bottom half, UAB used a pair of walks, a sac bunt, and a sacrifice fly to tie the game up at 1-1.
Oswalt and Samuel manufactured a second UWG run in the third as Oswalt got on via hit-by-pitch and took second on a wild pitch and scored under the tag on a bang-bang play following a single from Samuel.
Meanwhile, Cacie Cutright was dealing in the circle, and did not give up a UAB hit until the fifth inning when she gave up back-to-back bunt singles, but the freshman escaped with a one-run cushion.
UWG added onto the lead in the sixth as Cutright ripped a single and then Madison McDonald belted a no-doubt two-run home run to give the Wolves a 4-1 lead.
Three hits and UWG error in the bottom half resulted in a three-spot for UAB in the bottom of the sixth with the Blazers tying things up.
Neither team scored again through the end of regulation, sending the Wolves to extra innings for the first time in 2026.
Delaney Hoyle came on in relief and pitched around baserunners in the eighth, ninth, and eleventh inning, but got the win, tossing 5.2 innings of shutout softball.
A one-out walk and two UAB errors loaded the bases and then the Wolves never swung the bat and drew two walks to push two runs across, and then the Wolves slammed the door in the bottom half.
